Christmas shoppers are about to get a new tool  to help  keep their vehicles from being broken in to .

This Thursday, with support from local businesses, ICBC is launching a Christmas Shopping Bag campaign.

"Each Christmas people encounter theft and damage to their vehicles because they leave valuables inside," explains Christine Silver, ICBC Regional Loss Prevention coordinator. "Our shopping bags are made of strong opaque paper, so thieves cannot see what you’ve bought and target your vehicle because of it."

Shoppers can access their free shopping bag at Pine Centre Mall’s customer service booth. Bags will also be given out at Save-On-Foods grocery store check-out counters and Value Village.

Local volunteers will perform parking lot audits throughout the campaign. Vehicle owners might find crime prevention notices placed on their windshields recommending what they should do to improve their chances of avoiding auto crime in the future.

The campaign will run until December 24th.

This is just masking the problem. IF there was a true consequence to breaking into some one's vehicle and getting caught, such as a 6 month jail term for each break in, then the amount of them would go down.

Instead what happens is the person breaks into 10 cars, gets caught and the courts basically tell him don't do that again and then they are on the streets again. 60 month jail sentence would be bettter.
This is a no brainer. Can't people find their way to the trunk of their car. Isn't that what a trunk is for a place to keep our purchases or valubles.Prevention would be a better plan. Instead of the cashier asking if I have airmile maybe they could remind the customer to store their purchase in the trunk of the car. And if your shopping with your with your 40 thou plus truck whats a few more buck in loss. Your already lossing at the pump.

If they put them all in jail would our jails be large enough to hold all the crooks caught steeling. We would be spending tax dollars to build prisons.

Cheers
shoot 'em
dead theives aren't repeat offenders
It has been reported that potential thieves have watched customers buy expensive items, followed them at a distance, observed them place the bags in the trunk and return to do more shopping.

Then the thieves cracked open the trunk with a crowbar.

It takes only a few seconds.

Best plan is to leave the parking lot after placing any purchases in the trunk.

Nothing is ever said about punishment for thieves. There is no punishment whatsoever. Just a guilt trip for car owners/shoppers. What a stupid system we have.
broken knee caps would slow them down considerbly.
