Dion Gaining Support

The Opinion 250  question asked "Can Stephane Dion  beat Stephen Harper in a Federal Election?"  the results show 55% say Yes, while 45% say  No.

The poll was not  scientific, but  the results are not totally out of line with the results of the Ipsos-Reid poll conducted for CanWest News Services and Global T.V.

That question asked "If there were an election held tomorrow who  who you vote for?"

The Ipsos-Reid survey was taken during the week following  the Liberal  leadership convention, so there are those who say  the results reflect a post  leadership hype wave, however, the  numbers do show the Liberals have picked up support:

Liberals  38%  that's up 7 points from the last poll,

32% Tories, down 5 points

13% NDP  down 2 points,

the  Block remained unchanged at 11%

while the Green Party had 5%.

The survey also shows strong support for Dion's Liberals in B.C.  with  39% saying they would vote Liberal,  the Tories would get 26% of the B.C. vote, and the New Democrats 24%.

Seems no one finds it odd that Dion has a French Passport. If Steven Harper had an American Passport we'd never hear the end of it.
Oh well, the last two Governor Generals have been a pair of odd balls as well.
Time for the west to separate.

Or is that politically incorrect to say also?
Dion does not have a French passport, according to an interview with Peter Mansbridge (who has dual British/Canadian citizenship himself) but Dion's mother was a French citizen married to a Canadian. Dion has dual citizenship because he inherited it.

John Turner also has dual citizenship, as have many other prominent people all over Canada.

It is not an impediment to being a good person and a good Canadian.

If all the opposition can muster is an attack on someone because of there origins then they are more desperate and scary than I had imagined. If the info is correct, then 41 other MPs also have dual citizenship and are they a detriment or risk to our country? Some of the most prominent, influential and productive citizens of this country have there origins in other countries? This type of scaremongering or "politics of fear" is the calling card of the "Bush" politics of our neighbours to the south and it appears the Harperites have decided they are going to adopt this tactic as well. If they they succeed it is another low blow to politics in this country and to no one's benefit.
It's certainly not politically incorrect to mention western separation. It is just is not going to happen any time soon.

I came to BC in 1976 and talk of western separation was fairly common then in ALberta, where I moved from. The concept was for Alberta and BC to separate and form a new country, then BC was to be renamed Alberta West. Not surprisingly this movement had little support in BC!
Go Dion go.

Cheers
I don't think any national party leader should hold duel citizen ship. Loyalties should be 100% with Canada if you are in a leadership position.

Other have had duel British citizenship, but we must remember that we are still a part of the British Commonwealth and so in the past the would not seem unussual. That said I think in modern Canada it should now be unacceptable for someone in leadership to hold duel British-Canadian citizenship.

I liken it to the zionist(political ideology) control of the United States government through their 5th column common allegence to Israel as duel citizens making US policy on the Middle East for Israels benefit at the expense of American lives and treasury. That should be completely unacceptable for a sovereign government that should represent their citizens first and foremost.

that said I also have concerns with Dion's attempt to blame everyone else for everything and sounding very partisan. His trash talk of the Prime Minister was over the top IMO. He should stick to the issues.

I might be interested in the NDP this election for the first time ever. It would depend on their local candidate, what they promiss to this region, and where they stand on the Palistine aparthide issue.
Doesn't take long to get over Adscam and the gun control costs, does it? People get the government they deserve. Says a lot, don't it?
Chadermando has it right insofar as Dual Citizenship goes for a Leader of this Country. It matters little how Dion became a Dual Citizen.
The Governer General who as the Head of State, is also the Head of the Armed Forces saw the problem of Dual Citizenship, and gave hers up. She had French Citizenship, because she married a Frenchman. Dion should do the same, and for some very good reasons.

I suspect that few people actually understand what Dual Citizenship means, and I certainly am not going to explain it to you, however it is outlined quite well on the Federal Governments Website. There are approx 60,000 Dual Citizens living in Canada, however they do not know how many are living abroad. The best guess is 5 Million.

A large number of the Dual Citizens that were evacuated from Lebanon had not lived in this Country for 10 or 15 years, and I understand that 15000 or more have already returned to Lebanon.

When you have Dual Citizenship and you go to the Country of your second Citizenship, in Dions case, France, you then become a French Citizen. So if Dion was to visit France as our Prime Minister, once he arrived in France he would legally be a French Citizen, and technically have no standing as a Canadian Citizen. This in part is what happened in the Arar case, and I also suspect it was a factor in the case of the Women Reporter who was killed in Iran. Even though they were Canadian Citizens they had no legal recourse to Canada or the Canadian Consulate because they were no longer Canadian Citizens once they entered these Countries.

For those who support Dions dual Citizenship with France, I ask you this. How fast would you support him if he was a North Korean, Iranian, Russian, or Chinese Communist.???
