Did Someone Say Value Added?

The other day, I needed to buy some wood brackets for a project that I was working on.

Now I know the news has been full of reports about how the lumber companies are looking at the value added sector to increase their business down the road and get away from the spaghetti mentality that exists in the industry today.

So I made a trip to Home Depot to look for those brackets. Find them?  No Problem.

The item says "Solid pine, 10 inch designer brackets made by ‘Tekwani Expressions “.

Tekwani you say?  Never heard of that company in BC doing value added.

Well you’re right, because the Tekwani Wood Company is doing business out of... South Africa.

So there you have it, don’t know where they got the pine from, but surely the freight cost of shipping these puppies from South Africa to Prince George (or for that matter Canada) should make someone competitive in this province.

So we can grind out the two by fours, but looking around for some value added business is either a chore or there is no money in it, now which is which?

That, is one man's opinion.

I was thinkin Taiwan there Bennie, or maybe China because it seems more likely for the cheap crap to come out of China these days than Taiwan. But South Africa? That is strange. I always thought that 8 year old chinese kids made the best cheap crap in the world. Oh well...
