Tidal Wave Warning Cancelled

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre has cancelled the Tsunami Watch for British Columbia.

The alert came after an 8.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Kuril Islands north of Japan The alert started at Friday night and was cancelled this morning.

The earth Quake took place at and officials were pleased at the quick response.  All reports indicate the Provincial Emergency Notification System worked well.  Media, communities at risk and emergency officials were all notified of the tsunami watch in a timely manner. Tidal waves have hit the coast of BC , including Prince Rupert, in the past.  

In total more than 2,400 calls were made using the state-of-the-art phone notification system.  In addition, approximately 435 e-mail notifications and 900 faxes were sent to local governments, local emergency officials, police and fire departments and the media. 

The phone notification system is fully tested quarterly along with tsunami notification exercises.

The impending tidal wave froze and turned into flurries...
I think mankind and womankind still have to do a bit more research in order to get tidal wave predictions into the ballpark of reality.
Yet another reason not to live in Prince Rupert.
Kitimat would probably be even more dangerous. A tidal wave coming into the inlet could be many metres high.
My mom lived in Port Alberni when they had their big tidal wave in the 60's. It washed their house right off its foundations and took their car away. Moms family moved to PG a few months later. Grandpa still will not go near a large body of water to this day.
