The Northern Medical Program at UNBC  has welcomed a new group of students  who are being "trained in the North".

There are two interesting things about this group which will graduate in 2010.  There are 19 women and 5 men, and of the 24 students,  6  or 25% say Prince George is their hometown.

That is the largest contingent of Prince George students since the program started three years ago.

The students will have classes through video conferencing, internet, face to face instruction  and the one- on- one northern experience instruction they can only get from working with local physicians in various health care settings throughout the north.

The Northern Medical Program is a partnership between UNBC and UBC.

What a heart warming story to read. Congratulations to all the students. This is one of the best parts of Prince George.
Little did we realize at that meeting at CN Centre that it would amount to this.

I look forward to being at their graduation ceremonies.
I think the untold story is the proportion of women to men.

Some 40 years ago it was the reverse. Local interest not withstanding, I think that is the more interesting story. Something many of us were aware of, but when you see a picture of 6 locals with 5 being women, there is a story to be told as to why things have changed.

I suppose the same could be said for nurses, only in the reverse.

This story from Johns Hopkins dated 1994 states that the calibre of wome applying has been going up. At that time 43% of applicants were female, but 53% of the accepted applicants were women.

As the Calypso tune states ... "men smart ... women smarter in every way" ...
Fine looking group. I wish them well.
Cant say why things have changed but they certainly have.

There are 12,297 more females that males at UBC, SFU, UVIC UNBC

At UNBC we have 726 more females that males.

This is a continuing trend through out Norh America. One of the few areas where there are more men than women are the Certified Trades, where there is a significant difference.
