Change in Weather Brings on Ice

By 250 News

Opinion250 reader took this shot Tuesday afternoon at about 3:30 at the intersection of Highway 16 east and the Old Caroiboo Highway.

Looks like the truck was coming in from the east and turning south, but the trailer kept going west. Roads were icy at the time of the slip.

No one hurt, but traffic was tied up for some time.

Nice bit of citizen journalism.
Again, where is highway maintenance? Bridges and intersections are normal areas of concern, and again seem to be overlooked. I'd like to see a study of the increased death, injury, and accidents that have occurred since the privatization of highway maintenance.
The NDP transportation critic was on CBC this morning. They were driving from Vancouver north on 97 to see how well the highways are being maintained. He rattled off a whole bunch of numbers of what he felt was non-compliance with the contracts. I don't have the numbers, so appoligies if they are not included or they are wrong. I would think they would be issuing a report soon.

- at least about 400 locations where there was puddling on the road which would cause hydroplaning

- many traffic signs down or not visible

- numerous potholes - he described 150 mile house as the pothole capital of BC (I suppose that is from the point of view of highway only)
I put a 10 hour shift in last nite on the Blackwater and never saw 1 sand truck all nite.It was slick as hell.
It was the same on Highway 16 going west.
I think the YRB road boss needs to be held accountable or maybe replaced.
By the way folks, the reader who took this shot and sent it to us will get a cheque for $25. So, if you have taken a photo of a news event, and allow us to use it, we would love to send you a similar cheque!

Why spend money, the ice will melt off eventually, low bid contractors have to make money somehow, might as well stay home and let the ice and snow melt off on it's own.
Oh, yeah!
I have been quite vocal on this subject for years. It feels good to know I am not alone in my observations.
It is only a matter of time until one of the private contractors is sued.
A big thumbs down to Y.R.B.
There are many variables, but overall, the road maintenance in their district is poor. Blame the government though, for privatizing the service in the first place. These guys have to remain profitable.
metalman.
I don't think it is any worse than when the "Dept. of Holidays" was looking after the roads. On this particular corner there are dozens of trucks turning there every day. Why was it only this one that found the road too slippery to make the corner? It is a good thing there was no one coming from the west and turning toward the airport.
That's it, I'm calling Ms. Arcand at IceSafe and tell her this guy was driving too fast for the road conditions.

Hasn't he ever been to a hockey game ?
A Zamboni only does 15 km/h maximum on ice like that.
BTW, good photo.
