PG Team Splits Opening Day at Curling Provincials

It was mixed results for Patti Knezevic’s Prince George team in the opening day of the BC Scotties Tournament of Hearts, provincial women’s curling championship in Kamloops. Knezevic with third Tracey Jones, second Kay Lynn Thompson and lead Melinda Kotsch defeated former World and Canadian champ Pat Sanders of Victoria 7-4 in the first draw of the 8-team round robin. Trailing 4-3 after 8 ends, the Prince George Golf and Curling Club rink scored a deuce in the 9th end and stole 2 in the tenth end to put away Sanders.

 In the evening draw, Ashleigh Clark of Richmond dropped Knezevic 9-4 in 8 ends. Clark broke open a 2-2 tie with three in the 4th end and added another three in the 8th end. There is a 2-way tie for first place after day one of the BC Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Allison MacInnes of the host club in Kamloops, and Clark of Richmond are at 2-0. Knezevic, Kelley Law of New Westminster, Jill Winters of Nelson and Sanders of Victoria are next at 1-1. Sandra Jenkins of Salmon Arm, and Maria Mallett of New Westminster are winless in two games.The Prince George foursome returns to the ice at 12:30pm Thursday against Maria Mallett before an evening game against Jill Winters.

The top team in the round robin will automatically qualify for the January 28th final in Kamloops, meeting the winner of the semi-final between the second and third place teams.
