The District of Vanderhoof is getting some cash to  go towards the construction of a new grass playing field, running track and washroom facility.  The District is getting $330 thousand  from the  Provincial government's 2010 Live Sites program.

"This is a great project for the community and I'm pleased to announce our government's support for it," said MLA Rustad. "The new field and track will provide increased opportunities for members of the community to be physically active."

The  new facilities will also help  Vanderhoof  boost its tourism potential, as it will be able to apply to host more cultural and sporting activities.

"This funding is going to go a long way to making the new athletic facilities possible," said Vanderhoof Mayor Len Fox.  "It's going to benefit almost everybody in the community, from students to adults who play organized sports to those who are just trying to get into shape."

As a former resident of Vanderhoof I know they've been wanting a permanent pool for over twenty years. Wouldn't it make more sense to put the funds towards that? You would get more use out of a pool than a running track.
Not really.

The maintenace costs will be substantially less and participation costs by the public will be nil.
Case in point in point is Massey Place...........between elementary school and high school kids it is worked well for may and june.
The spring, summer and fall sees the parking lot full of cars in the early morning with walkers using the track surface.
The fall finds football and soccer there. You haven`t lived until you see international soccer matches filling the stadium like last years u21 chinese womens team.....
The track should help to start a few new sports in the community allowing for some friendly competition between pg and there. This is a great project.

But a pool should still be part of the community. Council should go after dollars for it as well as long as the community is prepared to pay for the operating deficit that will occur for the rest of its shelf life.
Chetwynd has had a pool for some time.

Population: about 2,700+

Vanderhoof population: about 4,500+

tale of two cities.
As a former resident as well, I think there should be some consideration for a pool as well. It's nice to want the newer grass field, but not everyone will access that as much as a pool would be. They have been trying for a long time and I think it's about time they should have one.
owl- I was doing a little research on Houston BC, and they also have a pool facility with a smaller population than Vanderhoof. Perhaps Vanderhoof should have gotten more out of Alcan than some empty promises.
