As the baby boom ages, there is a growing demand for additional space for "complex care" for those who are no longer able to care for themselves.

Northern Health is predicting 2007/’08 will be very busy when it comes to construction of those complex care facilities.

"We have a very specific construction plan for residential care in each of our facilities, so the new facility that Chartwell is developing (in Prince George) is part of that.  We have also projects in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Quesnel, Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, and smaller projects in Chetwynd the Hazeltons and a couple of individual small projects in other communtiies," says Northern Health CEO Malcom Maxwell.  He says all of the projects are on a workplan for completion in 2008.

"Some are just about ready to tender," says Maxwell, "Others, we’re still working with our Regional Hospital Districts, who provide 40% of the capital funding, to confirm the scope and acceptable budgets for those projects, but we expect  07-08 to be a busy construction year to add complex care beds across the north."
