As of last night, no cases of stomach illness had been reported at PGRH’s Emergency Department as a result of a meal of under-cooked chicken strips served to 137 students at Pineview elementary. (click here from earlier story)

School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper says the parents of six students called in sick to school yesterday and, based on their symptoms, may be feeling the effects of Wednesday’s lunch.

The President of the Parents’ Advisory Council at Pineview says parents are understandably concerned, but are coping well.

Michelle Rolfes says, "We’re thankful the ladies who were doing the hot lunch program recognized (the under-cooked meal) so quickly and took very quick action on it."

"The parents who we’ve talked to are concerned for our children’s health," says Rolfes.  But she says they understand, "It’s something that was an unfortunate accident, but parents are doing just fine."

The vendor that catered the meal has voluntarily ceased operations while Northern Health investigates. (click here for that story)

Rolfes, her voice breaking with emotion over the events, says, "When our children are involved it always gets to the heart of you, but our school’s really worked together to get through this and take whatever action we need to take from the investigation that’s going on."

Dr. David Bowering, NH’s Chief Medical Health Officer, has commended staff and parents at the school for jumping on the situation right away, allowing all parties involved to be pro-active in this case.

"For us in public health, it’s a unique opportunity really.  We usually hear about food-borne illness after the fact -- in other words, people have already become sick and cases have been reported to the Emergency Department’s physicians.  But, in this case, we heard about the exposure."

Course if the SD provided a proper kitchen area and staffing then our children could actually get a hot meal at school. Even if they rotated staff amongst schools so that once or twice a week that was offered. At my daughter's school they are not allowed anything with nuts and can't heat up anything in the microwave as their teacher takes his lunch and therefore no one to supervise the operation of the microwave. Apparently the people hired for lunch time monitor are too busy to supervise that aspect.

Needless to say my child is a bit bored of what sort of meals she can potentially take to school !
Ahh the poor girl. In our days we took sandwiches and fruit to school for lunch and were damm thankful to have it. I am sure in those days our parents had a lot less money than parents today but they still looked after thier own and did not expect everyone else to look after thier kids.....
once again contracting out to the lowest bidder proves to be detrimental to someone, this time it was our kids who got sick. Money before safety just is not right for our society. We allow this to happen. We are all sheep.
Why can parents not look after thier own kids. Why does the govy who are the people have to feed the school kids?Mabey the parents should have thought of this while the hormones were running rampart.....
It may be hard for today's generation of parents to believe, but we actually did take brown paper bag to school containing our lunch of all things!A sandwich and an apple and a drink of water did the job nicely.Sometimes we even got a cookie!!!And nobody had to supervise that either. We were also allowed to eat our lunch in the classroom and then go out side to play.We had a half an hour for this, and then the teachers got their lunch in the staff room.
We did not get a hot lunch nor did we expect or require one.And wow!!!...sometimes we even had a hotdog day but I guess that is not healthy enough anymore.I notice now it has to be something like pizza although most times the parents have to pay extra for this. It's a lot cheaper to make a sandwich is it not? Let's face it,all these changes in what parents expect the shool system to provide are one of the reasons it costs a hell of a lot more to send a kid to school, and why school districts have so much trouble making budget.School is not daycare, nor should it be.Parents are responsible for their kids lunch. Not the school district.Get back to basics and things will improve in the school system.A hot lunch is not a requirment to having a healthy or well eduacted child!
Yah! Yah!there is some real people out there.....
I live on (the sidewalk side of) a street where kids walk to school. Hardly a day goes by in the summer when I do not have to pick up brown paper bags with obvious school lunches in them: A sandwich, and apple or banana!

Simply discarded, thrown under a tree or a bush - probably rejected in favour of some junk food bought from a vending machine!

Signs of an affluent society, abundance of plenty?

Can't blame the government for everything that is not perfect, or can we?

JUST AN IDEA.. WHY DON'T WE BUILD A BIG DORMITORY TO HOUSE ALL OF THE KIDS. THEN THE LAZY PARENTS CAN HAVE MORE TIME TO GO TO THE BAR TO DRINK AND GAMBLE. PARENTS COULD ALSO SLEEP IN INSTEAD OF GETTING UP AND MAKING A DECENT BREAKFAST AND LUNCH. SINCE WHEN IS SOCIETY RESPONSIBLE FOR FEEDING KIDS AT SCHOOL.

Pineview Parents 'Pensive' After Kids Served Under-cooked Chicken.

I'll tell you... it's when the parents STOP thinking that the situation gets ex-pensive.
I have a real offence to giterduns comment about lazy parents!!! As a parent of the low income bracket with a child in school, I do make his lunch every morning but you know what???? When it gets down to crunch time, having a hot lunch program helps me feed my son. Maybe labelling all parents as lazy, drunks and gambelers isn't too smart....I know I am not lazy, don't drink or gamble.
What are you people talking about? This has nothing to do with government or lazy parents for that matter. And from what I know the parents pay quite a hefty amount for these "hot" lunches. These lunches are a nice change from the every day brown bags. Why is that such a bad thing? And if the kids got ill from under-cooked chicken then the restaurant that provided it should be accountable. Who else would be responsible for that?
I think that instead of bashing the innocent parties maybe you should get your facts straight!
Anybody care how the chicken feels? Not a vegan out there to comment on this?
Who cares about the chicken!! I like meat ...but the children are the issue here.
LOOK AFTER YOUR OWN CHILDREN>>>>>
How is having hot lunch program at school not looking after your children. I have looked after my children, and my grandchildren, very well I might add.
Scorpiogal... you make a very good point except what your talking about is a big part of the problem. It is unfortunate that you are in a low income bracket with a young child in school, but that doesn't change the fact that it is still not the schools job to feed your kid!Why is it the schools responsibility? It is yours, their job is to teach and educate kids. What we have now is an expensive babysitting service and that is the whole problem. We cannot afford that and our kids actual educations are suffering because of it.If you have trouble feeding your kids,go after the government. They are to blame, not the schools system.Good luck with that.
I think you Dozer and Andyfreeze must be talking about the programs in the city that are specifically for the underprivilaged children. I'm sorry, my mistake. I don't think Pineview school is one of those. Like my grandchildrens schools they have the hot meals once per month or so and its a special treat.
On another side, this issue with schools struggling with expenses and budgets ties in with my whole point on another post today. How can our ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES be even considering raises for themselves as Gordon Campbell announced (and they are!)when so much of the infrastructure in so many areas here in B.C.are in trouble? Schools/eduction,health care, seniors issues, daycare issues,on and on ad nauseum. An example is this "converstaion on healthcare".That money hould be in the healthcare system!I realize this is getting off the original topic but it is all related. It is about funding and the fact that it is so expensive for a parent to send their kids to school. We are too quick to buy the political spin and retoric and it is time it stopped. We need to fight back and now!No way in hell a mother in a low income bracket should be struggling to feed her children in this day and age and have to depend on the schools to help!We need to rap these overpaid twits and soon. Our tax dollars are being wasted and it is our own damn fault for allowing it to go un-protested.What a bunch of wimps we all are. The government knows it and uses that fact to their advantage.
