MLA Shirley Bond kicked off Literacy Week last weekend at the library

Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond and her counterparts, Pat Bell and John Rustad, haved wrapped up National Literacy Week by announcing more than $160-thousand dollars for School District 57 reading programs.

The funding will be used to continue primary projects and professional development in the city's three inner city schools with high aboriginal populations.  The projects are geared towards students who struggle with basic reading, writing and math.

"We know that students who struggle with literacy at an early age often have difficulties throughout their education, which puts them at a disadvantage when they move into the workforce," said Prince George-Omineca MLA John Rustad.  "We believe that the initiatives funded...will help prevent students from falling behind their classmates when it comes to reading and writing."

All 60 school districts submitted proposals for their piece of this year's literacy innovation funding, splitting a $five-million dollars "pie".

Teach them to read before they start school. It is called "school-proofing yer kid, as opposed to "street-proofing" your kid. "Why can't Johnny read?" He doesn't have to be able to. When he goes fer a job interview, all he has to say is, "I can't read or write, but I feel good about myself". In that essence I am pertaining to the fact some teachers do not fail students because they worry about the kid's self esteem and all that crap. Have a nice day.
