Five vehicles in the ditch or overturned between Vanderhoof and Bednesti this afternoon. Interesting to see the sand truck following after the ambulances and highway rescue trucks. This was after 2:00pm this afternoon. Why is it that the trucks don't seem to show up on weekends until after a rash of accidents? YRB is under contract to keep our highways safe, aren't they? Chester
Just came from town at 7:30 and not a sand truck anywhere in sight...Main highway not bad but side roads are skating rinks from one side to the other...good for 15km and be careful at that speed.....As usual..is Sunday so no one works...what a place
Overtime? Budget? 4 hour call out? It is only supposed to be bad between 8 AM and 4PM. I found that out when I phoned YRB when I got to work at 7:30 AM one day. Everyone was sliding down Peden Hill using the centre curb as a brake. Me too. It was ice. No blue lines or red lines. Maybe some bozo drove the Zamboni down it earlier. I phoned and inquired why no sanding truck. She said they have one on the way. I slammed down the phone. I hope she made a memo fer the ninnies running YRB. Grrrrrr!!!
History of privitization
As above, I phoned after I got to work at 7:30, and the YRB office wasn't open til 8 AM. So I had to call again at 8 AM. Again, Grrr!!!!!!
I came in from Alberta yesterday, and the roads were insane from about 85 kms out on HIghway 16. The worst part was at the Bowron clearcut area, where I counted 4 trucks heading West and 3 trucks heading East, parked. I continued on, doing a grand total of 20kms at times and thankful there was no on else on the road. I passed those trucks at about 6:20PM, and rolled into PG about 8:15PM. Amazingly enough, there was actually a sand truck heading out just by Ritchie Bros.

I know people don't like to see publically funded roads departments, but there just doesn't seem to be any accountability for the ways the roads are maintained now. Is it a question of profits over people for the contractors now, or do they honestly care about public safety?
The logic does not escape me. "If we send out a truck it is gonna cost me money and dip into my profit". The government doesn't have to make a profit. They can send out many trucks. It has a endless well of money fer these things. But then again, there go my taxes. A no win situation, eh? Except for drivers.
