The deadline for making a submission on to city hall about a proposed four-percent road rehabilitation levy is 5pm this evening.

Last week, City staff held three open houses at the Civic Centre to answer questions on the proposal. (click here, for previous story)

The idea is to move from financing annual road reconstruction to a "pay-as-you-go" method, meaning dollars from the levy would go into a reserve fund to be used solely for road works.  If approved, the measure would save $1.8-million dollars annually in interest on borrowing over a 15-year term. The City’s Director of Corporate Services, Kathleen Soltis, says the results of this consultation process will be presented to the Finance and Audit Committee next Wednesday.  She says city council will be given a preliminary look at the results during its budget meeting later that afternoon.  "We may not have a recommendation at that time, but we can give them a sense of what we found out, so far, and where Finance and Audit would like to go with it."

A property tax hike of 2.4-percent is being proposed for the 2007 budget.  If approved, the road tax would tacked on to that lift.

If approved?
Isn't it already approved.....
just need most of the coucil to raise their hands to make it official....
Is it not truly amazing that this Mayor and Council, along with city staff, have no problems notifying the resident taxpayers in a round about way that they should simply acquiesce. as rest assured it is a foregone conclusion they will do as they please, and your objections are simply bothersome and best to be ignored.
They would have been obligated to commit a certain amount for road maintenance in every yearly budget? What was the allotted amount, and was it used for that specified area? Is there a possibility we get ripped off? There is NEVER enough money to go around.
I do not believe they are capable of operating this city as a business, and that is exactly what is required.
When I see the Chamber supporting this stupidity I have no faith in their capabilities either.
The "bush bunnies" descriptive goes far beyond the ordinary tax payer. I do believe that it can readily be applied to all residents who turn a blind eye, or are incapable of seeing the forest for the trees.
So pay up one and all, and do not scowl.
You asked for it-but you will never get what you pay for, but you will certainly pay for what you get!
With a poor turnout at the city's open house on this tax increase, silence, absence and apathy speaks volumes.
Very few will remember any of this when the next municipal election comes around. It's a well known fact that people are too busy with other things to bother to tie a knot in their shorts to remind them to take vengeance when the opportunity finally comes to do so democratically.

All politicians rely on this *amnesia* factor of the general public. It works every time! It's a human shortcoming. Sheep suffer from it too.
