Kelly Road Roadrunners celebrate first-ever city high school basketball title

It was a night of showcasing high school basketball in the Prince George. A night when the D.P. Todd Trojans won a third consecutive city high school senior girls basketball championship and the Kelly Road Roadrunners celebrated a first-ever city high school senior boys basketball title.

The spectator packed CNC stands reflected how much the city league final has grown in importance among Prince George high school basketball teams.

D.P. Todd defeated the Duchess Park Condors 66-52 in the rubber match between the schools . The Condors closed within 4 points of Todd in the third quarter before the more experienced Trojans pulled away.

“It was as good as winning the provincials because it’s in your home town,” an ecstatic D.P.Todd head coach Dave Zielke said. The Trojans team defense was at its best down the stretch of the city final. The Trojans improved to 2-1 against the Condors this season.

“It’s fun to coach against Duchess,” said Zielke. Adding there is a mutual respect when the two teams square off on the basketball court.

The Valentines Day victory was six years to the day Dave Zielke coached PGSS and his older daughter, Anna, to the city basketball title.

There was no slowing down the Roadrunners to a first – ever city high school basketball championship. Kelly Road handled the PGSS Polars 68-41. The ‘Runners seized control from the opening tip-off, leading by 9 after the first quarter and 16 points at the half. The Kelly Road attack was led by Jesse Greenwood who put down 22 points. Dennis Stark scored 19. The Polars top point-getter, Jas Sandhu had 16.

For head coach Cory Antrim, a day of nerves turned to relief as Kelly Road rolled to a 27th consecutive victory.

“We were most impressive on defense,” said Antrim. In what could very well be a preview of next month’s triple-A boys zone final at Kelly Road.
