Will this big blazon beautiful balloon ever burst?
The BC Lions run up their season record to 7 and 0 as they take advantage of 5 Calgary turnovers and a whole lot of various and sundry mis-adventures inflicted upon themselves by the Stampeders this game. The concerns about letting up a little after beating the Esks were soon put to rest as Dave Dickenson was in fine form by spreading the ball around to his stable of offensive scoring threats and finishing the game with 400+ yds passing and 30+ yds. of calling his own number.
Henry Burris and the Stamps opened the scoring on a 67 yd. drive on their first possession ending up with a 3 pointer by Sandro Deangelis to start their game.
BC answered back in the next series as Dickenson went right at the underbelly of his opposition with his first play from scrimmage, resulting in a 64 yd pass and run play to Lyle Green. He finished off the drive with a 1 yd. keeper at 6:40 of the first frame for the major... 7-3 BC
One of the keys to the game for Calgary would be pressure on Dave Dickenson by the defensive line, and they delivered in spades. The BC quarterback was rushed throughout the game, in spite of the success he enjoyed out of sheer determination and grit.
It was all purpose back Antonio Warren running the BC lead to 14-3 late in the first quarter on a pass from Dickenson.
The quick lead taken by the Lions seemed to put the Stamps off their game as they were barely successful executing a simple third and one on a drive shortly after the BC major.
Exchanges between Burris and his center were a real problem resulting in a number of fumbles, unfortunately for the Stamps recovered by “both” teams.
BC pressure causes a Henry Burris fumble early in the second quarter recovered by DE Chris Wilson who took it 59 yards for the BC major....21-3 Lions.
Just minutes later Burris is intercepted by DB Ryan Phillips who returned the ball to the Stampeder 42, [Calgary’s 4th turnover of the game] but the drive stalled resulting in a three point field goal on a string by Duncan O’Mahony...24-3 BC
The Stamps reply just three and a half minutes later at 6:43 of the second on a Henry Burris pass and run play to Nicolas Lewis for the score cutting the BC lead to 24-10.
BC would quickly return the favor completing 11 plays for 81 yds. and capping it off with an Antonio Warren TD from the one with zero’s on the clock.
The teams break for half time with the Lions in a solid 31-10 lead. The Stamps dug themselves a big hole early as they swam upstream for most of the first two quarters.
O’Mahony would miss a 25 yard chip shot for a single to start of the BC 2nd half, and the Stamps would take one home on a 40 yard ball from Burris to Jenkins as the Lions were caught bringing heat and the BC back field was left vacant.
A 26 yd. touchdown by Antonio Warren rounded out the BC scoring [O’Mahony couldn’t get the ball away for the convert] while Calgary would reply with 2 majors, one by Martay Jenkins and a 13 yard run by Henry Burris...39-31 Lions.
A Calgary onside kick was recovered by Antonio Warren to snuff out any further opportunity for a Calgary score.
Notable notes:
Duncan O’Mahony’s game has been justifiably under attack by many BC faithful and again tonight his presence on the field meant almost anything could happen.
Punting was the least of his concern but place kicking was anything but reliable. Even the points he put up weren’t classic in nature and he looks to have his confidence shaken.
This is one position who’s importance will grow as the team finishes off the season and enters the playoffs.
The BC arsenal looked to be overpowering at times for the Stamps. Coverage was a problem as Dave Dickenson freely spread the ball around to a battery of options.
The BC quarterback was under constant pressure throughout the game as his offensive line was both beaten and overpowered all night. While he took a beating his strategy doesn’t ever appear to be to throw it into the crowd or at least the sidelines.
Not sure how long he will be able to hold up to this much punishment.
The last time the Calgary Stampeders won 2 in a row was July 2003.
The kick return game has already shown signs of impotance with the early loss to the team of Tony Simmons.
Geroy Simon left the game in the 3rd quarter after being knocked out in a collision on a pass play.
Brent Johnson wasn’t in on any Lions sacks this game [as memory serves...and sometimes memory doesn’t serve].
Was again impressed tonight with the Lions tackling. Saw some brilliant open field take downs.
Henry Burris also finished up with a 400 plus yard performance in tonight’s track meet.
Next game Hamilton at BC on Friday night Football, Aug. 19th.
Time for my medication.
