Joan Jarman accepts the City’s first Heritage award on behalf of the PG Library

It is a fitting way to kick off National Heritage week, the Prince George Public Library has received the city’s first-ever "Heritage Award of Honour".

The award was handed out in council chambers during this evening’s regular council meeting.  Mayor Colin Kinsley thanked the city’s Heritage Commission for initiating the award "to recognize efforts to promote and preserve the heritage of our community."

The library was selected as the first recipient for its project, "Downtown Streets" -- a downtown heritage walking tour program that was launched this past year.

The tour groups would stop at a number of sites where historical photographs were posted in storefront windows and tour guides gave short histories of each building at each site.

Downtown Prince George provided funding assistance and 175 city residents and visitors took part in the program last year, including a Chinese delegation in August and Communities in Bloom judges in September.

The library has applied for a federal grant to continue the program in 2007, and Downtown Prince George has pledged its continued commitment, as well.
