Prince George RCMP say an 89-year-old woman was bitten on the arm by what appeared to be a bull mastiff, while out for a walk in the Crescents neighbourhood today.

Police say a good samaritan came to the senior's aid in the 21-hundred block of Laurier Crescent - a female driver noticed the attack and blew her car horn until the dog ran away, the passerby then helped the victim and, eventually, notified the local detachment.

Constable Tobi Araki says the elderly victim was shaken up by the incident and suffered several puncture wounds to her arm, as a result of the dog bite.

Police and the City's Bylaw Control Officer attended a residence on Laurier Crescent and served the owner with a $one-thousand dollar fine and an order to comply with the City's 'Dangerous Dog' guidelines.

That's a good fine....take a bite out of the owner's wallet for allowing his monster to roam around town taking a bite out of helpless people. If it happens again, blow the animal away!
Yes it is a good fine, take the dog too. It bit once that's enough.
A thousand dollar fine, excellent. That'll hurt the owner(s). I hope it makes the news big-time so every other irresponsible dog owner who delights in training their dogs to be aggressive and vicious will be made aware that they could be next, assuming of course this particular dog was trained that way (I tend to think not, but it should not have been loose - period).

Training a dog to be vicious to protect your property is a serious responsibility. You cannot EVER leave the animal unsupervised and when you leave it home alone - it has to be unquestionably secured. Ergo - why bother???

Most people don't realize that when you give a dog love, companionship, food, and a friendly hand - it will return all that and more, and will naturally protect you if he senses danger.
Okay, I take it back "most people" should be "some people".
The $1000 dollar fine is good...but the dog should be put down.No exceptions. It WILL bite again.Wait for it.
We also do not know whether this was the first time the dog bit. Not all bitings are reported.
WOW all posters in agreement so far...is this a first on O250 ?
Hey wait for me!!
I agree also, put the dog down, or next time the fine is $10,000 and 6 months in jail.
Mcfly????? on the wall????

;-)
Why not charge the owner with assault with a deadly weapon? I get tired of people assuming that their dog is friendly and let them run free. My child was run down by a large lab and when I told the owner that I would take care of that situation should it happen again I got "but he's friendly - he just wanted to play!" What type of moron puts the ability to reason in the head of a dog? My kid becomes prey when he is small and runs and frankly he is not a toy for the dogs to play with.
Right on,

Good fine and a message to those idiots who let their dogs run free.

Kudos to those folks who helped out that elder. That seems to be the exception rather than the rule these days.
The fine is a great incentive however the dog shouldn't get a second chance. If one of my dogs ever bit "anyone" that would be the only chance. The dog would be put down. People can be so irresponsible...grrr
My dog has never worn a collar, and never will. He's a free dog. He doesn't even bark much less bite. He sees no reason to bark cause times are good, he's not caged up....
I agree that the owner should not only be fined, but the dog destroyed! What I dont understand is the clasifacation of breed. The city has said that Pitbulls and any cross of that breed be clasified under the muzzel protection law as those breeds are considered dangerous. I looked up the breed Bullmastiff and they are not considered a dangerous breed as they are not part of the group under the act. My consern is that buy not being spacific in describing the breed of dog in this incodent it might lad to futher generalization of breed. An example would be a Boxer,or boxer cross can look like a pitbull also the Mastiff breed is the oldest breed of dog in the world and believed to be the desendant of all large breed dogs. The Lab is of mastiff decent threw its crossing of the Newfoundland Dog. My point is if the dog isnt a pitbull type dog dont call it a breed that is on the dangerous dog list if it isnt. Otherwise it leaves to many wrong destinctions about what is or isnt considered dangerous. The only dog that ever bit me was a Cocker Spanial!! To this day I dont trust the little numsculls. Would the owner of that dog be charged under the dangerous dog act for bitting me.The way this artical reads it would. Thats my point.
Once again society has grouped, tagged, and labeled. Too bad. Some pit bulls are so loving and cuddly, others..?? Same with Dobermens, Rotties, German Shepherds, etc. Then you have the odd vicious little poodle that will gladly tear your nose off if you bend over far enough, otherwise it is happy with your ankles!!

Truth is - it is the OWNER not the dog. Like a gun, it's the OWNER, not the gun - that kills. But (-----) blames the gun, wants them registered, responsible and honest citizens have to comply the same as the criminals (joke joke)! That way the focus is on the guns, rather than the criminals who use them for criminal acts.

Unfortunately, in most cases - once a biter, always a biter usually applies. The only time a dog should not be put down for biting someone is when it is the act of defending it's master.
