Coach Ray Bourque and Lakewood Junior Secondary Lakers captured zone honours
The Lakewood Junior Secondary Lakers capped off a near-perfect north central junior girls high school basketball season. A 12 point second half run powered the Lakers past the D.P. Todd Trojans 50-35 for the north central zone championship. Todd, the only team to defeat Lakewood this season, trailed 19-18 at the half before the Lakers run-and-gun style took command in the third quarter.
“We starting getting the rebounds and the outlet pass,” Lakewood head coach Ray Bourque said. The Lakers outscored the Trojans 19-4 in the third quarter.
The junior girls from Lakewood Secondary improved to 33-1 with a ninth consecutive tournament triumph.
“It’s nice to get the results for their hard work,” Bourque said.
“It is quite an accomplishment for the kids.”
D.P. Todd defeated Duchess Park 48-39 for the second north central berth, behind Lakewood, to the provincials March 8-10 in Vernon.
Expectations are never too high when the north central junior girls enter the 16 team BC championship against the more competitive hardened lower mainland teams.
Lakewood Junior Secondary‘s realistic goal is a top ten finish.
“We’ve talked about beating the Lakers best ever finish at the provincials, a 9th place showing in 1999,” added Bourque.
The Kelly Road Roadrunners defeated Columneetza of Williams Lake 55-35 to capture the north central zone junior boys high school basketball championship and the lone berth to the provincials March 8-10 at Port Coquitlam.
