Final Budget Meeting On The Tube

The City of Prince George  will head into its final budget meeting  Wednesday at 4:30, and this time it will be televised.

Shaw Cable has agreed to provide live coverage of the session which will  start with the Finance and Audit Committee's proposal to add a 4% boost on your taxes  for road rehabilitation.

Although it isn't unheard of for Shaw to provide coverage of a budget meeting, it isn't something that has been done in recent years, and even more rare to happen on a Wednesday.

Mayor Colin Kinsley says  he placed the request to Shaw for the coverage "The coverage is important because of the debate on the Finance and Audit Committee's request for the tax levy for road rehabilitation" says the Mayor. The debate will see Councilors wrestle with a plan that would  put a 4% boost on taxes.

There are four options up for discussion:

  • A) stay the course and make no changes, but  carry the cost of borrowing money to pay for the repairs
  • B) add a 4% tax levy to property taxes to  set up a  road rehab reserve
  • C)add a 2%  tax levy this year,  and 2% next year
  • D) add 2% this year,  1% next year, 1% in the following year.

"Council wanted to keep the public involved and aware of what we are doing. This is to keep the process transparent" says the Mayor who also offered praise for Shaw.  "It isn't easy for them to provide this kind of coverage but we are grateful  that when we asked,  they agreed to do it in the interests of keeping the community informed."

The coverage of the debate on the road rehabilitation levy begins at 4:30p.m. Wednesday, February 28th on Shaw Cable 10.

Determined to get our money, hey!
At leadt you can watch your taxes go up live on TV
I think this can only be a good thing.
You realize non of this has to do with roads. It has to do with the fact that our Mayor and council have borrowed so much we are near our limit and they have some big expenditures coming up, like the new Police building, potentially an arts building and of course the speed skating oval that they are promoting for the athletes to come train on.

If our so called leaders had been on the ball for even the past 5 years they would have addressed this a long time ago.

By adding a levy for the so called roads, then they can borrow more and put us further in debt.
I wonder how Owl is doing with the Habitat for Humanity house lot he was going to look into getting through council?
Owl could put those councillors and city staff in their places on live TV! And set them straight on the budget as well.
Wonder why it is being broadcast on live TV? Councillor Skaken isn't at his best in council, showboatin' afterwards is more his style. Was this voted on?

It's so you can watch yourself getting f*k'd live on TV. Hey let's also approve a levy for maintaining other city services, how about a parks levy, an overpass levy, an underpass levy, a sidewalk levy, a school levy, a sewer and water levy, and a "anything else we can't afford right now" levy. Glen Clark is the only other one I can think of that could piss money away so quickly and easily. Good thing we're here to tap into, to pay for all the mismanagement and glorious, shiny, "things we don't really need".
The meeting is being televised so that that his freinds can see out Mare in action.

And for those who think Clark pissed away our money just waite and see who holds the record after the olympics.

Cheers
No doubt....
YDPC ... I just sent kevin an e-mail to let him know I am back in town. If City Hall decides that they will support the additional Development Cost Charges, then my offer to help will not be required for that purpose. However, I may be able to help in other areas as they move through the new project.
kimbo...well said and bang on mate!!
Well ... interesting discussion about the Habitat project. It seems to me that Councillors may not have understood the sequencing of what happened with this project.

Over to Habitat to see if they wish to raise the issue further with City Hall. I think they have a case to be made. Whether they wish to make the case is something that only the Board of Habitat can decide.
