There seems to be a desire to change the way public complaints against the RCMP are investigated.

In the B.C. legislature today, Mike Farnworth, the NDP member from Port Coquitlam- Burke Mountain, asked if the Solicitor General, John Les would call a public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Kevin St. Arnaud.

The Solicitor General didn’t rule out calling for such an inquiry, “I am well aware of the circumstances surrounding the death of Kevin St. Arnaud, and the matter is currently before the RCMP complaints process. I suggest we wait for the results of that process.”

The NDP pressed John Les, asking that , in the wake of the St. Arnaud and Ian Bush cases ( both cases of civilians being shot to death by RCMP officers) if  Les would bring about change that would see the development of a complete independent investigation process.

Les says he has been in contact with his federal counterpart, Stockwell Day "It is too early to suggest exactly what kind of collaboration might be available between the provincial and the federal government in this case, but the fact that there is some opportunity to develop a more collaborative process…. Certainly, that prospect is there, and I'm committed to following up on that with the federal minister to the greatest extent possible"

Kevin St. Arnaud was shot to death in  Vanderhoof in December of 2004.  The Police investigation  recommended  no charges against Constable Ryan Sheremetta.

While we do know that Stockwell Day is not exactly a rocket scientist,I would like to think that his sense of justice and fair play would be enough to bring about a public inquiry on this farce. If that does not happen and soon, then the RCMP and the provincial and federal governments will no longer have even a smidge of credibility left. There is conflicting testimony by someone who was there. What more can they possibly need? This testimony comes from a good cop who has been at it for a while. That in itself should be enough. What else can they do...call her a liar? The RCMP do not need more negative publicity...get on with it!!!

Members of the RCMP improperly entered into a situation with Mr. St. Arnaud that resulted in his death.
A member of the RCMP improperly discharged his firearm in the incident."

Excellence in policing through accountabiltiy....such a powerful phrase.
When Leah (Kevin St. Arnaud and my daughter) went to his grave during inquest in Jan. her words were "I love you and I wish you didn't die forever." The words of a 3 1/2 yr. old can jab you in what's left of your heart especially when it's your own little girl.
