      Lakers go over strategy at DP Todd Tourney

Sixth place efforts led the North Central high school basketball teams at provincial championships.  Lakewood Secondary had its best ever finish at the BC Junior Girls tournament in Vernon. Three consecutive victories after an opening day defeat earned the Lakers 6th place in the 16 team tournament. Emily Kaehn averaged 18 points a game for Lakewood to earn all-star honourable mention. The Lakers were also named the most sportsmanlike team. D.P. Todd Trojans placed 15th overall.

At the double-A provincial high school basketball championships in Kamloops, Duchess Park 2-2, placed 6th Nechako Valley finished 8th, D.P. Todd was 12th in the 16 team senior girls tournament. Mercedes Van Koughnett of Duchess Park  and Jessica Wallace of Nechako Valley were selected to the all-star team. The Duchess Park Condors placed 10th out of 16 in the senior boys provincial.

Blaine Chiasson of Prince George Secondary returned home with a bronze medal from the BC High School Sports snowboarding championship at Whistler. The Grade 12 student was the fastest in the opening run of the men’s giant slalom and his combined time for two runs earned third place in the competitive field.

In alpine skiing, Grade 11 student Travis Bellerive battled the adverse conditions to place 41st out of 75 skiers in the men’s slalom.  Joseph Beaman and Murray Hubbard of John McInnis Junior Secondary were among a handful of Grade 8 participants in the senior high provincial. Beaman was 46th, Hubbard finished 57th on a day of rain, wet heavy snow and 80 kilometer winds on the Whistler slalom course.
