An inquest into the death of Ian Bush (shown at right) who died while being released from RCMP custody in Houston on October 29/2005,  has now been scheduled.

Bush had been taken into custody for having an open beer at the Houston hockey arena and for failing to give his proper name to a police officer.

Police have said there was a struggle when Ian was being released, and he was shot in the back of the head. The RCMP officer who fired the fatal shot will testify at the inquest.

The inquest is scheduled for May 22 - 25, and will reconvene July 3 - 6 as required.

Presiding Coroner Shane DeMeyer and a five-person jury will publicly hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses in order to determine the facts surrounding the death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future.

The family will be represented at the inquest by Vancouver lawyer Howard Ruben .

Save the taxpayers money, we already know they will find 'no evidence of wrong doing'
Cynicism aside, this appears to be another mistake, I mean Ian's death. Should not have happened at all, if the cop was following procedure. There are those out there who believe there is a conspiracy going on with this case.
metalman.
I don't know if there is a conspiracy as such, but I do think the RCMP will attempt to cover for this young member as much as they can.I think this young cop lost control and just plain screwed up.Now a kid is dead who should not be.And he had no weapons. So to me,nothing justifies shooting him in the BACK of the head.Like the shooting in Vanderhoof, something is very stinky here.A lot of people will be watching this so they had better do it right.
What is happening to our system? The deaths of 2 young people in such a short time span is just not acceptable. And I believe the same as you metalman and Andyfreeze. There just are no excuses good enough for these officers that are supposidly trained to handle any situation. It doesn't seem to matter either whether or not there are witnesses, the outcome is still the same. How can that possibly be? All the families of these 2 kids want is truth and justice. I don't think thats to much to ask.
The cops are supposed to lock up their guns in a metal box in the prisoner bays before they take them ( prisoners) out of their cars...... then when they let them go...they escort them to the exit door and ..see ya! Then they go get their locked up guns and hit the road again. That's what is supposed ta happen!!
ooops "will" and "free" Sorry i need to look before hitting Post Comment...lol
"The people of the Department of Justice work to ensure that Canadians enjoy a justice system that is fair, accessible and efficient. We help the federal government to develop policy and to make and reform laws as needed." Taken off website:
http://www.justice.gc.ca/en/dept/index.html
I just hope they practice what they preach. Justice and fairness no matter who pulled the trigger. We will all be reading (or in court room listening) word for word and taking in all the facts in this case. Justice for Canada but mostly justice for canadian families is a must and people need to stop ignoring the real problems. Change has to come if we keep talking about it. Someone with power will have enough heart, hear our stories and make change for all of us who are so deserving. We know you exist out there somewhere. ;)
You are absolutely right about that Heidi.
And I don't think anyone is going to stop talking about these 2 incidents for years to come. And yes there are people out there who could help to change this inept system of ours. The only problem is numbers, unfortunately there may not be enough of those people to make a difference. I'm afraid that the fear of reprocussion may overpower there desire to do the right thing. We can only hope. I hope you and your family are doing well Heidi, take care.
Ya, boys, like I have said in previous posts, and to reiterate, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, the calibre of candidates for the R.C.M.P. must be very low, if these recent examples are the cream of the applicants (they would only select the best, most qualified applicants, right, Captain Highliner?) Do the R.C.M.P. receive training on the physical handling of prisoners, AND on hand to hand self defense?
metalman.
Changing the system is inevitable, the public outcry from these two incidents, and others not so close to home, have spurred that change (investigative procedures - after the fact). If one were to look at the numbers and compare realistically, we are not doing so bad. True, when we don't do so good and someone makes a mistake, it hurts - someone - a family loses a loved one or an innocent person's life is destroyed.

Not only do we have trigger happy cops, we also have pedophile teachers, preachers and church officials, members of the judicial system itself are "on the take", our political leaders sneak us into the valley of shadows and death. WOW - it pretty much stinks on a whole. But again, the numbers, 10,000 cops and we weed out a couple of bad ones. Ten thousand teachers and we weed out a couple of bad ones (figuratively speaking as I am not aware of any actual statistics related to this accounting???).

Better screening and hiring practices and forced accountability. Accountability sounds like a cop-out (no pun) because it is of course "after the fact".

It takes mistakes to learn the system doesn't work, it takes effort to change that system, it also takes time. We hang in the brink waiting for miracles of justice to heal our broken hearts, to clear away the cobwebs of confusion. Good people are raised to know the difference between right and wrong and yet the concept of wrong is not easily within our comprehension.

Accidents and mistakes, with better care and precaution, both more preventable. No amount of questions can change what has happened, and no amount of change can ever guarantee something like this will never happen again.

Sometimes, it's not an accident or a mistake, sometimes - it's just willful damage. The differences need identifying.
Aside from all the statistic crap...right is right no matter who you are. Punishment for a wrong doing is the law. Justice must be served whether you're a perverted priest/teacher or lying and covering for a death that you created no matter who you are. Humans of any kind must be punished no matter what their occupation may be if they committed a crime. If a banker robbed the safe at work...it would be a crime, if a firefighter acted on arson ....it would be a crime, if a priest was to lay a hand on a child inappropriately....it would be a crime, teacher sleeping with student, people in politics exposed of wrong doing and so on and so on then why in this crazy world we live in do police officers get away with taking someones life unnecessarily and get a better location of work, is hired lawyers to defend the story created by officer(s), remain on the payroll after lying on the stand and never charged of a crime? Don't tell me it's because that's just how it is.
yup, sometimes - that is how it is, but that's the crap that has to change. If they done wrong - they cannot get away with it. Accountability today will change tomorrow.
Heidi, you, me, and many others know its wrong.
But for some reason it seems a few cops are getting away with murder, while arresting others for petty crimes....or in some cases no crime at all.
Murder is so dispicable, it makes me sick to just think about it....I hope those cops have to live the rest of their days with a guilty conscious for the killing they did...at least that will be a bit of punishment.

Heidi, have you taken up a legal fund to help raise money to fight this?
If so get me the info so i can donate...thanks
No, no legal fund Mcfly (flashback of my brother knocking me on the forehead...."Hello McFllllllyyyy!!!" as kids lol) :) Seriously though i'd love to see funds set up for the mothers/fathers of the lost sons/daughters if they are willing to have that done for them so they can take it to the next level if they choose to do so. I wouldnt know where to begin myself until of course I use my friend 'google' to know more. To tell the truth i've stepped on many toes talking about this and cant seem to shut up about the matter and you know what....I don't want to shut up so I guess those people better put on their steel toed boots. :)
As usual, with this case, and the other related one there are sure a lot of experts and people claiming to 'know' this and 'know' that. Regardless of the outcome of the any inquiries i think it is safe to say that i hope the people in the various juries/judging bodies are more open minded to actual facts and less of a bunch of know it alls!
Get the actual facts and then state your opinions/concerns in a way that might convince or cajole the unconvinced. Preaching to the converted without the facts is pointless.
Here is one fact i have stated before: If, in fact you in a choke hold you have SECONDS to react, regardless of your training. After that you are out. Period. I know this first hand as i have seen it work. So please, no more talk about stuuf you know nothing about.
There isnt sufficient evidence to suggest that our police force is on a homicidal rampage, or that we need sweeping reforms to our recruitment standards. These two cases, while unfortunate, do not signify a trend. You want a trend, look at some of the video and read some of the articles about assault on police officers.
As i have also previously stated, I have a deep seated suspicion/resentment of anyone in authority. However, i resent it even more when people scream for one thing (fairness and full hearings) and then go on practice the opposite.
There is just a lot of confusion and heartbreak is why people have a problem with these cases. We just can't understand how someone can have back turned and put someone in a choke hold? I just can't see how that's physically possible to hold with that much strength and time from behind your head or behind your back to be able to choke someone? And he(Ian) had to have had his back turned don't you think in order to be shot in back of head. It was also stated that camera was in fact turned off. We just want the truth. The truth isnt confusing.
caranmacil you are correct. Investigating the incident and gathering the facts is going to be the way to determine what happened, for some this is hard to accept, for others impossible. We all have opinions - but we do not all have the facts.

Statistically speaking, there are more officers killed in the line of duty than there are perps or suspects killed by officers on duty and every single incident is a tragedy to someone and requires a full investigation. In some cases the cop is suspended, in other cases - they are buried. Generalizing is not fair.

If you want to bang statistics, on the day of the incident - how many calls did the RCMP attend in the Province of BC?? How many of those calls required the unholstering of a weapon? How many officers were assaulted while out on one of those calls? I think if we all knew the answers to these questions some of us might form new opinions on the subject, one thing for sure, we would be better informed.
previous post is in defence of RCMP on a whole. Generalizing is not fair.
No generalizing is not fair at all but most of us are referring to Kevin and Ian's cases in particular. Most of us are informed of what's going on by online articles written by reliable sources about these cases. It is extremely sad when anyone dies unnecessarily and its extremely sad when justice fails. Change never hurt anyone so why is it such a big deal to try to make things better for us in British Columbia (and everywhere else actually) especially when the facts are presented to us in black and white about these cases and soon Ian's case (May 22). It's fair to say i'm sure we all appreciate and have a huge respect for the men/women in blue who do their jobs by the law.
Got a nice phone call today :) Watch global Vancouver news tonight at 6:00pm or if up late at 11:00pm. It's more on police investigations process. That's all i know.
