Environment Canada says the winter of 2006-2007 wasn’t the warmest on record for the weather region which includes Prince George, but there is a warming trend showing.

Records kept for the past 60 years show this winter ranked number 15 when it came to warmth with the temperature about 2.2 degrees  above the norm.

The Warmest winter on record was in 1992 with temperatures in the region being 5 degrees above normal. The coldest winter was in 1960 when temperatures were 5 degrees below the norm.

The stats show the warming trend indicates that over the past 60 years, temperatures are holding at about 3 degrees warmer.

As for precipitation, this was not the driest or wettest winter for the region. The records show the winter of 1972 was the wettest with 44.1% more precipitation than normal, and the driest winter was in 2001 when precipitation was 52.7% below the normal marks. This past winter ranked #40 with a 24.1 % drop in the amount of precipitation.

Nationally, the warming trend continues across the country with Canada showing an overall temperature increase of 2.3 degrees. The only place in the country registering a cooling trend is Atlantic Canada. Temperatures there are down 7/10ths of a degree.
