90 school districts cross the province have been  given the tools to  teach  kids about the mountain pine beetle.  A special education  kit  has been developed  with the coopertion of the Province and the Council of Forest Industries.

The kits  are designed for  high school students, and build on the  information that  was already  available  in a teching tool  for  grades 4-7.

The kits include:

  • A teacher's binder,
  • classroom posters,
  • video,
  • slide show,
  • vials containing adult beetles and larvae, and
  • bark and wood samples

Doug Routledge, vice-president, COFI northern operations says his group was pleased to be involved in the project ". "This new resource provides teachers the tools they need to teach their students about the significance of the mountain pine beetle epidemic and its impacts to B.C.'s forest industry as well as impacts to our forests, communities and economy."

Glad the Gov's money has gone towards dealing with the Pine Beetle! How is educating pre-college school children about the pine beetle require a kit? I wonder how much money was contracted out to develop and produce such kits. The government seems to be putting an awful lot of money in discussing and not a lot in doing - unless of couse it impedes on our Alberta neighbours! Nice publicity bonus point but truly wasteful!!
You know there is also so many demands on our education system to teach the kids so many different things, from when you and I went to school. Why should it be up to the schools to teach this program ?
"Why should it be up to the schools to teach this program ?"

Not up to the schools in my opinion. Look at it the other way around. All good teachers and good course planners are continually on the lookout in the elementary and secondary school systems to make subject areas relevant to everyday life. The more you can do that, the more students you can "turn on" to why they are at school.

This is merely one more example of that in my view.
Becca raises a very good point. I also would really like to know just how much the government is spending on putting these packages together.I would think it is safe to say that it did cost some heavy dollars. And I really don't see how it is relevant to finding solutions to the Pine Beetle issues that are coming at us.We all need to be aware of the bug problem but I am not sure if this is worth the cost?
Perhaps the wise old owl knows where to find this information?(yes Owl,you ARE good at that..)
And but the way Owl...I love it!!!"turn on" students? Hey,you just dated yourself!!!I haven't heard that terminology in years!
