The Northern Health Board has accepted the resignation of NH chief executive officer Malcolm Maxwell, effective at the beginning of June.

He  is leaving to  take on a post with a hospital in Ontario.

"Malcolm joined Northern Health in October of 2002 as our first permanent CEO. He has brought together a team of leaders who share some key beliefs. These include our partnership with Northern BC’s health providers, our open relationship with Northern communities, and our on-going efforts to build better health services across Northern British Columbia," said Jeff Burghardt, chair of the NH Board.

"The past five years have been enormously rewarding, and I’ve greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work with dedicated health care professionals, community leaders, and stakeholders across Northern BC," said Maxwell.

The recruitment process for a new CEO will begin immediately.

The NH Board has mandated that the search for a new CEO will focus on a candidate who will best allow the organization to build upon the health region’s accomplishments to date.

"We are sorry to see Malcolm go. But we are also confident that the ideas and beliefs we have developed together provide a sound foundation for our work in the years to come," added Mr. Burghardt.

Maybe the hospital in Ontario needs a bus fleet to serve their patients too. Works here. I hope this comment wasn't upsetting or perceived to be bad-mouthing of any individual or labour group or any hospital for that matter. I sincerely apologize beforehand if I offended anyone reading my comment. The preceding was brought to you by lessons learned about forming and speaking an opinion on this forum.
:-)
$250,000.00 per year plus perks and we still cant keep them down on the farm. Grass must be much greener in Ontario.
Health Authorities were created to act as an insulating layer between the people and the government. That way the government could underfund the authorites and create the illusion of public health being unsustainable. When the general population complains about poor health care, the Authorities are blamed for not using their meager budgets wisely. Thus, the government is protected from the reprisal of the great unwashed who are expected not to understand what is going on. It is no wonder that the Health Authorities can not maintain quality leaders and employees. Would you want to work as a government scapegoat? Not likely. The systems are being setup for even greater failures just to promote Campbell's push for private health care. We the members of society should be extremely insulted at been treated as ignorant peasants by these polioticians but, instead the general public goes along with this bull$hit believing single lie they are told by government. We are almost all sheep.
It is sad to watch our health care system deteriorate into profit making at the expense of the people.
The value of his house went up in the past couple of years so that he can afford one in Ontario now, unless it is in GTA.

One of the problems of rising house costs. Less incentive for new people to come here, and more mobility for those who are not quite happy here.
Well the rising house costs wont last much longer, every day I see more and more For Sale signs along the streets in the residential areas. I beleive that those that were waiting to sell their house for a big profit and get out of town are making their move. If they dont sell and go now they may be here for a long time.

Insofar as Health Care goes. Famlies should be given a certain number of health care credits each year for non life threatening illness's. These credits could be paid to your Doctor when you visit him, and he can send them into the Government for payment. Major surgeries, transplants, hip replacements etc; would still be paid direct by the Government.

Once you are responsible for your health credits, and you could see what the Doctor is charging you for a service, and if you felt that he was not earning his money, you could take your business elsewhere. A certain percentage of credits not used in one year could be carried over to the next year, also credits not used for one spouse could be used by the other, or by the Children. Once you ran out of credits for the year, you would be transferred to a user pay system and you would have to pay all or a portion of the cost for any further health care that year.

This system would give you as an individual more control over you health care spending, it would allow you to see what your actual health care costs are per year, and would give the Doctors an incentive to be more competitive is providing good quality health care at a competitive price.

As it is now, people go the the Doctor, take all kinds of tests, xrays, etc; and have no idea at all what it costs, nor do they care because it is paid for by the Government.

Once individuals become responsible for the cost of this service, with a built in penalty if they abuse it, the cost of health care should go down, and service should improve.

"and you could see what the Doctor is charging you for a service"

When the OHIP first started in Ontario, they used to send a copy of the invoice to the patient. When my daughter was born, her post natal procedures included a circumcision. I sent the OBGYN a note and he re-issued the invoice. :-)

The way the system works now, once has not the faintests clue of what one is charged for.
You got that right Owl.
Owl states, "When my daughter was born, her post natal procedures included a circumcision". Are you from an obscure Sub-Saharan tribe that practises female gender mutilation? I hope not. If you are, don't let a bunch of busy-body feminists find out who you are or they will hang you up by yer uh, er, ah, your you know whats. Tsk.Tsk.Tsk.
Gender? Silly me. I meant genital. Sorry.
Harbinger .... if I were what you said, then I would not have questioned the bill ....

DUH!!!!!!!
Works fer me, pal.
Taking a cue from Harbingers' first comment, above, I have become aware that perhaps I am too sexist. Therefore, from now on, I shall be known as: metalperson. One pfennig from each sale of my autobiography will be donated to the Gloria Steinem revival tent meeting.
Nah! just kidding!
metalman.
I think I'll stop being sexist, too. Broads don't like that.
This "Broad" hates sexist pigs!
Yes the board is the insulation between us and government and at the same time the NHA seems to also be insulated from both the people and the government?
On one hand they tell the government that they can't possibly do any more with the money allocated, and on the other hand they tell the people that is all they can do with what has been allocated and all the while, they shuffle enough money into their own pile as the money passes through their hands!
Talk to anyone in the Health industry and see how many jobs the NHA has built in their empire!
