The New Liquor Store on Massey Drive in Prince George has  been open for less than a month, and  it has been hit by thieves.

A witness reported seeing two young people hanging around the building at around 3:30 this morning.  The witness checked the site and discovered one of the  large plate  glass windows had been broken.

Although the business has metal security bars,  someone was able to wriggle around that, to reach the display of  Scotch.

10 -15 bottles were stolen.

Police  combed the area and  came across two  young males dressed in the same kind of clothes the witness has described.  A police service dog  was called in to  do a "back track" from  the site the two young males were  discovered.

The two youths are in custody.  The  damage to the  window is said to be in the thousands of dollars.

of course, the new liquor store is next to "crime centre mall"
Scotch? At least the thieving youths have taste!

Welcome to spring break (and enter).
They took the care to place concrete filled steel bollards in front of the glazed areas to deter most vehicles from crashing into the building. But they still allowed those on foot or smaller vehicles to break the huge panes of glass through common methods.

I do not understand why the owners/designers did not break up the glass into smaller panes, either vertical with mullions every 2 feet or so, or even into squares of say 2 to 3 feet. There would still be glass breakage, but unless someone is out to simply vandalize, rather than a smash and grab, it would reduce the cost of each smash and grab. With small panes like that, it would also help to put laminated glass in. Those using smaller tools to smash would be surprised when there is no damage to the glass after the first hit or two. On a stronger hit, they could be surprised when the glass does not shatter and leave them enough room to even pass a finger through, let alone a hand and arm.

Then, of course, there is learning what can be put into window displays and what cannot be put into window displays and how close to put it to prevent a smash and grab.

I thought we just had an “expert” in that sort of thing do a session at the Ramada the other week.

Anti-vandalism design has been around for many decades. One of the books I have on it was published in the 70’s. It seems each generation has to learn over again; each person in charge of such matters at the Liquor Branch has to learn over again, and each Architect has to learn over again.
If one wants to go one step further, there are always rolling shutters which will also be an energy saving device when let down at night.
Three cheers for the alert citizen who cared enough to observe and report!

The plate glass window will cost several thousand dollars to replace. I hope the will make these parasitic brazen misfits pay off every cent plus a hefty fine plus lengthy jail time in a secure cold concrete bunker - without any windows, not even small plate glass ones!

Time fer some cheap cameras hung here and there? Evidence, pal.
Well me and my pals were running low on the beer we got last week... so with the colder temps this week we decided to score some scotch to keep us warm.

Wild turkey MMMMMMMMMMMMMM !
