Doepker Spin Leaves us Dizzy!

I am awaiting the comments from Initiatives Prince George on the difference between their employment numbers for Doepker Trailers, and the company's own estimates.

Salmon Arm’s Economic Development officer says 36 production types and 8 management. Growing to 50 by the end of the year and ultimately 100 to 120. President of Initiatives Prince George, Gerry Offet, said in his press release the reason why they didn’t come here was because we didn’t have enough skilled help, 135 welders and metal fabricators. That’s about 100 workers more than the company  will need in Salmon Arm.

Surely we must have 36 production types in the region. It’s a bit like the spin we got on the Rocky Mountaineer tour trains, the staff were pulling too many hours, and hence they need to stop in Quesnel.

When you walk around where the trains will stop in Quesnel, you don’t have to go to Oslo to get a prize to see why Quesnel got the nod.

Now someone must be busy at their computer trying their absolute best to try and come up with yet another reason why Doepker didn’t come to Prince George, of course all along trying to spin the story without giving up the real reason.

I'm Meisner, and that is one man's opinion.

I agree with you on this, Ben.

Why the spin? It seems to happen all the time. I'd prefer if they'd just give us the real reason for a decision and stand by it, even if I think they're wrong.

Some other spin I can think of off the top of my head include the justification of a big screen at the CN Centre and the math used to explain how we're "saving money" on the new garbage collection system.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Offet to come up with anything you can understand.
He can talk for 10 minutes, and say absolutely nothing--and you will be dizzy!!!
Why should he explain???
He is collecting his paycheque.
He is spending our tax dollars.
He is only continuing to prove he is useless.
Obviously the "powers" at Prince George city hall like him!!!!!
So if you don't---too bad!!!!!
So give hour head just one more shake!!!!!
Give YOUR head another shake.
Gosh, I hate it when my computer cannot spell!!!!
I spoke to a welder yesterday who has moved back to this area after being on the island for several years. He grew up in Vanderhoof and is an individual who is in the 30 year old range. He is working for one of the forestry equipment suppliers fixing and customizing heavy equipment for logging operations.

He said welders are needed throughout the province. It is a “sellers” market right now and he expects the situation to get worse from the “buyers” point of view. Jobs in the manufacturing sector pay in the range of $18/hr while jobs in the oil and gas sector north of here pay between $25 to $35, so a manufacturer will have tough competition to get and keep workers.

I agree that there is a very suspicious spin to this story form IPG and I hope that it will be pursued until we get a satisfactory explanation. We must keep holding organizations such as IPG accountable for their actions since the Board does not seem to be able to do that.

However, we must also not loose sight of the fact that the skilled labour shortage predicted for some time is starting to show signs of hitting us and, as I wrote before, it will hit cities such as Prince George more than larger urban centres unless we recognize that and understand how to deal with it and deal with it effectively.

Remember, the next 10 years is going to see an increase in forestry activity in the harvesting, transportation and silviculture component, with an expected major downturn after that. This is the service centre for the forest industry and we will benefit from many of the spin-off jobs this brings.

So, invest in real estate now and get out in 5 to 6 years and reap the profits before they disappear unless someone has managed to diversify the economy by that time.
Jerry Offett. give me a break. that clown won't pipe up until he throws the next pipe dream at us. As for owl, thanks for the realestate tip. you are way too clever dude.

later
or better yet, does owl happen to be a realtor? hmm....... giving yourself a free plug there bud?

who knows eh?
Mr. Meisner, Just wondering whether the answers had arrived?
I have read many of the comments on this Doepker move and one that has never been mentioned and that is the geographic location of Prince George and the climate. If there is a lack of trades people in Armstrong Im sure that there are many willing to move there even from PG. Armstrong has the location and it is a very attractive place to live.
Just wondering.
