Volunteer Prince George’s Jo Nore reminds City Council "Volunteers are a Treasure"

When it comes to volunteering, Prince George is a "gold mine" of generosity...

Volunteer Prince George spokesperson, Jo Nore, had a glowing statistic to highlight for City Councillors last night, marking the start of National Volunteer Week.

Nore says the most recent national survey shows 45-percent of the population aged 15 and older volunteered last year, with the provincial rate mirroring that national level.  "However, Prince George is number one in the province, we are at 62-percent volunteerism -- that is just absolutely excellent."

Nore says, "We are very happy to report that we beat out Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Matsqui, Kelowna, Kamloops -- way to go Prince George!"

Councillor Don Zurowski says Nore, herself, must be given a lot of credit for Prince George's numbers through her efforts at Volunteer Prince George.  Acting Mayor, Councillor Don Bassermann, points out the city is well-known for its enthusiastic volunteers.  "We wouldn't have been able to win the bid for the Royal Bank Cup, if we didn't have the history that we have," he says,  "We wouldn't be able to host the Senior Games next year, 2008, if we didn't have that history that you (Nore) nurture along."

Volunteer Prince George will be helping local non-profit organizations showcase what they do with a "Volunteer Fair" at Pine Centre Mall this Friday.  A Volunteer Appreciation Evening to honour city residents will be held on Saturday night.
