The University of Northern BC is flying its flags at half mast, in memory of the 32 students and staff members killed by a gunman at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg Virginia yesterday.
The massacre ended with the gunman, now identified as 23 year old Cho Seung-Hui, taking his own life.
He was an undergraduate student in his senior year, majoring in English. Born in South Korea, he had moved to the U.S. with his family when he was 8 years old and grew up in a Washington D.C. suburb.
There is a connection between UNBC and Virginia Tech. UNBC President Don Cozzetto is a former Virginia Tech student. He attended that University from 1987 to 1990 and graduated from its PhD program in Public Policy and Public Administration. "I'll never forget my time there; it changed my life" says Cozzetto "It's outside of the realy big universities and the really big cities where the students, faculty, and staff can make a difference in the lives of ordinary people and their communities. That's also what makes the tragedy in Virginia so hard to understand, those things just aren't supposed to happen in rural areas."
