Today, the Federal government will  name the arbitrator   who will  come up with the  final agreement between CN Rail and  the 2800 conductors and yard workers  with the United Transportation Union.

Last  Monday the government  forced an end to the  dispute with back to work legislation.  That legisltation took effect on Thursday although  many workers had already  started  returning to their jobs.   CN had locked out about 300 employees last week when the union started  a series of rotating strikes.

Although the union had requested the Federal Labour Minister allow the two sides to reach an agreement without the  threat of back to work legislation, the railway  said  that because of the union's internal problems, CN didn't believe the union  could negotiate a national deal and was prepared to start regional  talks.
