Aggressive Driving Targeted

Prince George RCMP are spreading the word that with the arrival of the month of May, they are launching their efforts to  reduce  the number of aggressive drivers on the road.

Aggresive driving  is one of the top three  highway  safety concerns, along with impaired driving and  non- use of seatbelts.  Police say it is a contributing factor in  one of every three  collisions, and  two thirds of all fatalities.

Police say  aggressive  drivers know they are doing it, and some make the choice to drive that way.  Police say if aggressive drivers don’t make the choice to  reduce the  incidents of such behavior they willbe targeted.

The aggressive behaviours include

  • speeding,
  • tailgating,
  • unsafe lane changing
  • rolling through stop signs,
  • failing to stop for yellow or red lights
  • blocking intersections
  • failing to yield

Prince George RCMP say they will be out in full force looking for aggressive drivers.

And what about them thar coppers who display the same aggressive behaviors in their cruisers?
RCMP, concentrate on nailing tailgaters, please! ICBC's website lists it as the number one complaint of those who respond to its survey!

"# failing to stop for yellow or red lights"

The RCMP can hand out many tickets every hour to south bound trucks which turn left from Central Street unto 5th Avenue - through yellow left turn signals and to trucks which are still in the intersection while the straight through traffic has had a green light already for several seconds!

Any progress on the promised repair to the Cameron Street bridge?

It was an election promise, I seem to recall.
You have the right to report them Imorg....get the unit number and call it in.
If you must....
Heyyyyyy if the boys in blue and grey are going a little too fast on the way to a domestic, or a break in, or a lost child complaint, that's ok with me....we all might need them one day and when we do we want them there right away no matter if it isn't an emergency situation or not.
Yes, the left turn down fifth at Central, nearly every signal there are vehicles running a red light. Straight thru northbound traffic has to sit and wait until the morons go through. I believe that particular light should have a longer delay set, after the left turn signal changes to red and before the thru changes to green. It might reduce the number of frustrated drivers going north.

As for tailgaters? I keep thinking, I need a new back bumper, one of these days a rabbit or fox is gonna get me one!!

I support the quest for attacking the aggressive drivers. They are jerks and need to be woken up and shown some decent manners!! Take away their rides for a few days for each offence , make em walk....
My understanding is a tractor trailer is legal as long as the cab of the truck is through the intersection by the time the light turns red. This means your trailer will still be in the intersection with a red light in that situation.

Some lights switch so fast that if the tractor was able to stop people would be killed rearending the unit from behind so the safest thing is to proceed at a safe predictable pace unless you can not make the cab through before it turns red.

3 out of 4 people killed in a accident involving tractor trailers in the United States are killed from rear-ending the unit when the unit is making a fast stop and is being tailgated in its blind spots. For a passanger vehicle it is no different then running into a brick wall with no warning.
The worst lights are the ones on central that switch the second a car pulls up and 3 seconds later the light is red. With 63 tons even when you are prepared for this it s a lot of momentum to stop in a short distance.
Yes but the people following the tractor trailer should have to stop!..don't you think!
If you keep enough space from the tractor trailer, then you have enough time to stop (and not be a tailgating the trailer).
If the tractor/trailers are doing exactly the speed limit, they should be capable of stopping safely, they should also know if they had enough time to get safely through the light or not. Unfortunately, most often they are speeding, even 10K over the limit greatly increases the risk of having to run a light because it is not safe to stop. Some of these units are doing more than 10K over though. Go sit at the lights at the bottom of Peden Hill, or the lights at Ferry and Hwy 16. The tractors running those lights are MOVING and the light is red long before they enter the intersections.

One more thing, if you are at a red light and it turns green you are only allowed to proceed into the intersection if it is safe to do so. So, if you charge out and ram some idiot running a red left turn light, just to "show him", you are in the wrong. All he will get is a ticket for running a stop light, you will be charged with undue care and attention and reckless endangerment. Some of them featherbrained creeds running the red lights know this too, others are just plain without manners and believe the rules do not apply to them.
Chadermando I believe you are correct on the legal issue of the cab being thru the intersection. I believe that the Right of Way goes to those already in the intersection?
something that might help lessen the aggression out there is for people to drive in the right hand lane. Let people in a hurry use the left hand lane and get the ticket.
Merging. Two days ago a cop car ran me right past the end of the merge and then suddenly decided to let me in between him and the pick up ahead of him.

All I could do is keep going and see which end of his/her cruiser I was going to be let in on. I wasn't about to stop in the merge lane like you see around town all the time. Typical PG merge situation. I guess I could just start merging and see if anything happens when I bump doors.
What really burns me is those guys driving through town with girls hanging out the windows, booze spilled all over the upholstery, cigarette burns on the dash, load music playing....they should arrest those guys...so I can drive for awhile.

:-)
Merge lanes - The vehicle in the right hand lane always has the right of way. Those that use the left lane to pass are in the wrong if they do not leave room for those in the left lane at point of merge. It is up to the left lane to merge and not the right lane as a lot of people seem to think.

A tractor trailer is to use the right lane at all times unless passing another vehicle and is not responsible for a person using the passing lanes to pass when it comes time to merge. The person in the left passing lane is in the wrong if contact is made at merge.
Don't get me started on merge lanes (insert crazy face here) Wonder how some people would survive driving in Vancouver or Calgary....(insert shocked face here).
