The Bamboo House at the corner of 6th and Dominion in Prince George has been sold.  The owners are retiring.

 The New  Owners?

The City of Prince George.

The City paid $200 thousand for the  property.   There are no immediate plans for the parcel which now includes the neighbouring piece that used to be home  to   PGTV.   The City also owns the vacant lots  west of the  King’s In Bible Store, and the  lots between 6th and 5th.

The City still holds title to the property which is  supposed to  be developed  by the Ghiai corporation  for the "Metropolis" condominium project on 5th.

People probably do not realize the fame of the building in the circle of people who appreciate fads such as Tiki restaurants in the 1960s ....

"Sadly, I was expecting it to look this way. At least they didn't 'make it go away' like Vancouver did with Trader Vics. Still, good to see some of the elements there, especially inside. What's most unfortunate is that the owners probably don't realize the real potential of such place."

I also remember Trader Vics. Both used to be wonderful places to eat.

Maybe the City will be making a tourist attraction of it and getting a contractor to come in to run the restaurant as itr used to be.

;-)
200 thousand? Seems like quite the bargain for a commercial property. Look for it to be torn down along with the old pgtv building to make way for new development.
And that "metropolis" project: why hasn't that been started? Does the developer know something about the near future here? Something fishy here......
New development? You mean there will be another casino?

What the developer, who is actually not a "developer" in the truest sense since "developers" have money to back up their "developments". He is simply a broker who spent a few days throwing together a pretty picture or two with a quick "study model", looking for development money.

He needs buyers who are willing to commit with hard cash to at least buy 50% if not 75% of the condo units. So far it appears he has not found them, otherwise he would be in the ground since that is how he would be making money ... using other people's money.

This building is part of the same block that condo development was to go on. I suspect this entire block is now in the City's hands.

Performng arts centre? or Prince George's Central Park complete with a lagoon?
That is where my wife and i got engaged, and now it is owned by the city!! Sad.

The City runs down the neighbourhood to pick up cheap property, what a scam.
Did you notice in the background of that picture was social housing? Nice.
check out northern health authority inspections on the property for the past while.....
Great move(s) by the City! When is Harry Backlin's project finally going to start, the one on the corner of 7th & Victoria?

Pretty picture on the sign - but no action!

All those fenced weedy lots all over the place don't do a thing to revitalize the City - they are a sign of stagnation and just plain eyesores!

And the hotel next to the Library - remember it was rezoned for that purpose a decade or more ago? What about the Foodteller, bought and sitting empty?

And the Ghiai corporation project for the "Metropolis" condominium on 5th?

It is not right that the City allows properties to be rezoned for *definite* projects and then allows them to sit idle and non-productive for many, many years!

These applicants are wasting the City's time and money, in my humble opinion. A time limit should apply after which the zoning automatically reverts to the previous one and the applicant pays a fine!

Triflers and profiteers cause the city to look neglected - it's a shame!

This was a great restaurant back in the mid 70's when it was the Outrigger.Haven't been in it since the early 80's.Hopefully they won't tear it down.Must be good for something?
And that just reminded me of another chinese joint we used frequent...remember the Purple Lantern? (ok,so it probably didn't fall into the "great"catagory! but very popular with the "after the bar is closed" crowd.
And yes,Trader Vic's in the Bayshore was a great loss too.A damn fine place to eat (and drink!)Never did hear why it was shut down?
I wonder what will happen when they shut down all the sushi places .... not much I suppose ....

and Starbucks????

The first one in PG at the UNBC should be kept as a shrine .... :-)

Guess the bagle places have pretty well gone now....

But seriously .. I think that the Outrigger motive should be kept and the entire block developed as an international oasis in the middle of Prince George.

Ghiai's development with Persian influence would fit right in. Maybe a bit of Bavaria a la old Vienna Schnitzel, The Waddling Duck's Quebec Stone building influence, a western round wood log building, The Manor house's Tudor stye timber frame, a Ukrainian dome (oops, the court house already has that) ... well, I am sure there are others ....

;-)
Social housing? One does run into the occasional sociable person around there.

;-)
The City could put in some more social housing in this area, as they already have some in the old Liquor Store across the street. Highly unlikely

Why is the City in the Real Estate business, it seems that they are fronting for business. Which I might add is not their business. Seems they were able to sell some property for the Gaming Centre. (The United Way Property) and they also bought the property at 4th and Victoria for the new (Not needed) Police Station. I understand they also bought the old Williams Moving and Storage property on the East end of 3rd or 4th and probably some other property in the area. This no doubt will be for their famous Co-Generation project.

In addition of course they have sold off the Driving Range Property at the Par 3 Golf course for a Car lot. Sold off land for the Super Store, and of course the property across the street the Brick and whatever else the developer puts in there.

Wonder what kind of money they got for all this property on 16 West. Lets not forget that they were a factor in getting the property for the Casino from the Provincial Government.

They moved their yard from the Carter Lite Industrial to the East End of the City, which allowed them to move the Soccer Fields from the Golf Course Property, which gave the Golf Course room for a Driving range, and then they bought the Buildings on Ospika right across from where they were located previously from Yellowhead Road and Bridge. I heard they paid 5 Million for that property. Wonder what Yellowhead paid for it when they bought if from The Provincial Government.

Seems taxpayers may have paid for this property a couple of times.

There is a lot going on out there, however it seems very few if any people have the time, the energy, the interest, or the resources, to check it all out.
