The Coroner’s inquest into the death of a 19-year-old Lytton man who jumped into the Fraser River while in police custody was supposed to begin tomorrow in the Village’s Council Chambers.
However, the B.C. Coroner’s service has announced an adjournment due to "delays associated with the venue chosen for the proceedings."
In May of 2005, 19-year-old Brent Andrew Abbott was taken into police custody for allegedly being intoxicated in a public place - a park on the west side of the Fraser River in Lytton.
According to the Coroner’s Service, Abbott had been walking between two officers on the CN footbridge, when he jumped over the handrail. Police report the man struck a crossbar before falling 30-metres into the water below and not re-surfacing. An extensive two-week search failed to locate any sign of the man.
The inquest will be re-scheduled with a date to be announced in the coming months.
Meantime, a Coroner’s inquest into the shooting death of 22-year-old Ian Bush of Houston, while in police custody, begins in Houston next Tuesday, May 22nd.
