Foothills Boulevard should have its speed limit boosted to 80 km says resident

Foothills Boulevard has four different speed limits  posted.  There  are sections that have a maximum of 50, then 60,  70 and 80 kms/hour.

John Greco wants the entire stretch boosted to 80km/hour.  He says the limits are too slow for this fast pace world in which we live. He told Prince George City Council the existing 50 km/hr  just  are too slow for "the type of traffic we've got  out there."

He also wants Highway 16 from Westgate to the Highway 97 intersection boosted to 80- km/hour.

Greco told Council "I remember Flying Phil Giglardi, he said its not speed that kills, its excessive speed."  he also called for Council to bring in a ring road because "Its just not right to have those big rigs on the City streets."

Mayor Colin Kinsley says the City is working with the Ministry of Forests and  the Ministry of Transportation to  see that provincial highways within the city are maintained.  "I am the last one to talk to about boosting speed limits" said the Mayor, "I've been trying to get them boosted for years, especially on Foothills!"

How many speeding ticket on foothills Mr Greco?
I agree that the speed limit should be higher in these areas, but extending the 80 zone from Westgate to Hwy. 97 is a little far in my opinion. Let's just turn the current 60 zone into a 70 zone. That way people could do 75 without feeling guilty about it.
2 words !!! SPEED KILLS !!!
An accident at any speed can kill. It can be safer to go a little faster than the limit, as it prevents tailgating and decrease the chances of rear-endings.
I wouldn't be opposed to making Foothills at least 60 all the way through, however I don't think the HWY needs to be raised at all.

Why are people in such a hurry? It's not like Prince George is HUGE and it takes very long to get to one end or the other...come on...going to speed limit is going to kill you? No, consistently speeding, irresponsible driving etiquette (tailgating, passing like you are driving the Indy, excessive speed) will kill you and possibly others first.

Last time I looked there are numerous crosswalks on Foothills Boulevard, with many kids crossing it on their way to and from school. Foothills Boulevard is NOT a highway. Keep it all at 50Km/hr.
There may be some need for a bypass around Prince George, both North/South and East/West, but turning a road through residential areas into a highway is just foolish.
I could be mistaken, but I don't think there are any school crosswalks on Foothills except maybe between 15th ave. and Cranbrook Hill road. Make the rest of it 80 km. and leave that one section at 50. Most experienced drivers drive at a speed they know they will be able to handle a vehicle properly. The worst is when you have a double lane such as Foothills and you have two vehicles travelling side by side doing the speed limit. This just begs for road rage, because there are always some people that travel over the limit. That is when the tailgating and other things happen. Let the police monitor speeding, and don't try to do it by yourself.
There is a pedestrian controlled signalized crosswalk at Cascade Avenue just north of 15th. There is an unsignalized crosswalk just north of there near Ochakwin which connects Nelson to the east and Elkhorn to the west via walkways. The speed limit in this section has remained 50km/h while the rest has been increase to 60km/h

There are no other crosswalks on Foothills since much of it is a single loaded road (population on one side only) other than in that area and just north of North Nechako Rd. I believe there is a tunnel under the road in that location.

I tend to push the posted speed limit. While driving the road is easy to do at higher than 60km/h, from the perspective of a person who accesses foothills from the adjacent subdivision in a 60km/h section, I would hate to have to do then when people will drive another 10km/h faster. Given the configuration of the road at the point I access it, it is difficult to make a decision to go in the middle of winter when the streets are icy and it takes a while to get good traction at start up.

Given that at a posted speed of 60, many will drive close to 70, I could not see it being increased to 70 and people actually going 80. Now, if people would drive in the right hand lane if they are the only ones on that side of the 4 lane road, it would give others a chance to come into the traffic from the opposite side of the road and turning left. But, few people in BC practice the “stay in the right lane unless you are passing slower traffic” rule. On the north side of the river, the speed limit is already 80.
As to many kids crossing, I must be going at the wrong time, but there are not that many. No matter how many though, the speed limit there is 50 and I would not raise it. The main intersection is about to come up anyway, so time to slow down there.
I learned something last time they tried to fiddle with the speed limits on Foothills. After it was all over and everyone had their input, nothing was accomplished. Status quo. Extrapolate to the Province and the Feds. Nothing changes. Governments move like glaciers. Sure wish they would melt away like glaciers. Too much government.
No , bad drivers kill. The fact they were speeding is just a factor.
Should speeds be increased?
Maybe.
Am I guilty of exceeding the limits....
on occaision....
guilty...
Will I maon and groan and call the police office down when I get a ticket...
no.... it will be my stupidity that get me that ticket...
People need to quit being so selfish and leave home five minutes earlier and keep speeds down. Where there is a sidewalk the limit should be low even if its just one kid that ever uses that sidewalk. Not worth it and yes any speed can kill but i'd rather get hit from a car going 50 than 80 any day and have a chance to survive.
Furthermore, 10 km/h can be the difference between serious and minor injuries.

Raise the limit on Foothills Raceway...er, I mean Blvd. ? No.

Why ? Traffic already does 85 - 95 all the way from Moore's Meadow. That's why all the trash is laying all over the road, blowing out of the backs of pickups and trailers, as they sail along to the landfill. Raising the speed limit all the way through, will just ensure that everybody is doing 85 - 95, all the way to 15th.
"After it was all over and everyone had their input, nothing was accomplished. Status quo."

Not quite. It was raised from 50 to 60 in the Heritage area. It remained 50 around Ochakwin to 15th due to both vertical and horizontal curves which cause bad sightlines and, I would think, the crosswalks.
Reasonableman - you hit the nail on the head again, the limit is 60 and they are already doing 80 and 90 or more. Raise the limit and sure enough those who speed now will just continue to speed in the future, only they will be going a lot faster.

Going North up the Hart the limit is 60, if you are not doing 90 or 100 most days you litteraly get ran over in a lane change, tailgated, fists shaken at you or "birdied". And believe me you get this doing 80 never mind at 60 or 70.

IMO - What we have out there is a lot of people (parents) who believed the rules never applied to them, they brought up their children to believe the same thing, and now they drive our streets and highways with no manners, always gotta be first in line, they are more important than anyone, they believe we have no right, absolutely NO RIGHT to be in their way.

So, ya City Hall, you can go ahead and put up all the new speed limit signs you want to, it won't ever make a difference to the majority of the people out there who already DO NOT CARE. If you cannot enforce the ones you already have in place please don't waste my tax dollars on putting up new ones for no good reason.
