Three people  had to be rescued from the Chilako River  Saturday afternoon  after their canoe overturned on the river.

RCMP  had to  bring in a search and rescue helicopter to  pull them  from the riverbank.

Police say  all three had been able to swim to  riverbank, but the closest residence on that side of the river  was over two hours away on foot.  Police say the three didn’t have  proper footwear to make the trek.  Police also say one of the three had not been wearing a life jacket.

Police are reminding all  who want to  be on the rivers to ensure they are properly prepared for any emergency and to  wear life jackets at all times when on the water.

One for the "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ?" file..
I hope they get the bill for this rescue.
At least they made it. Maybe a little wiser now ?
We all have those "What were you thinking?" or "What was I thinking?" moments like when I was 13 and went skiing at Hart Highlands not really knowing how to ski and ended up in some roots of a tree growing out of a bank because my earmuffs(mom made me bring them) fell out of pocket and tried to act cool and grab them...lol..While i was in roots all the little kids went zooming by me. Returned boots and all this dirt came out of them. Sometimes I feel part cat.... 9 lives. Glad they made it too and i'm sure they are smarter for it now and know what to do for next canoe trip. Things happen so fast and unexpectedly. :) Hope this is the most extreme story we hear after the long weekend is over.
Oh I don't wish them or anyone any harm.
But to go out on a river, that is full of fast moving spring runoff, in a canoe with no life jacket??????
That takes a special type of intelligence
After reading the article and comments, I thought I would give an update. I know the people involved in the incident, one is my brother who borrowed life jackets from me, but didn't listen to my advice against the trip due to spring run off, high water and an inexperianced crewmate. Contrary to the report all three were wearing life jackets and had proper footware. Everything went fine until they let the inexperianced person take a turn at the paddle due to calmer conditions and were upsidedown in two minutes. (OOPS what was I thinking) The canoe was recovered today, unharmed and is currently resting in my yard. Search and rescue was declined but called anyways. A fire had been started and everone was warming and drying when the RCMP arrived (first on the scene). All involved appreciate the assistance of Search and Rescue, the RCMP and the homeowners who called for help. The best thing is,that everone is fine and I got to add the little dig (I told you so!!!)

PS Apparently the water is cold, I have this from a reliable source.
First thing is this is not the time of year to try the Chilako River. June-July-August are the best months because the canyon section of the Chilako can be more dangerous at higher water levels. Lucky they lost it prior to the canyon parts.

Next thing I find odd is that I don't know of many canoes that can navagate the Chilako River and still carry 3 people. A two man canoe can barely manage and if they were 3 people in a two man canoe then they were one too many IMO. Likely why they flipped it.
Glad you still have your brother drivechain now go give him a big kiss on the forehead.
