Soldier With Family in P.G. Killed in Afghanistan

The  tragedies in Afghanistan have now  directly touched Prince George.

Corporal Matthew McCully has  become the 55th Canadian to die in Afghanistan, his family lives in Prince George.

 He was killed today when he stepped on an anti-tank mine  during an  offensive.

Col. Mike Cessford, deputy commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, said in Kandahar,  “We lost a good kid today ... It's a pretty sad day. But he was doing what he needed to do, what he wanted to do.”

McCully was a signals operator from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signals Squadron based at Petawawa, Ont., was killed around 8 a.m. near the village of Nalgham, some 35 kilometres west of Kandahar City.

Friends  of McCully's have already started a posting wall on Facebook, saying he was one of a kind.  McCully was also part of the mentoring program, training Afghan troops.

How sad to lose such a vital young man. My condolences go out to the McCully family. My thoughts are with you.
At the end of the day all one can hope for is that the policies of our government are worthy of the sacrifice that Matthew McCully made for his country in Afghanistan....

I know the family involved and my heart goes out to them during this awful time. My sincere and deepest condolences to them.

I did not know Matthew, but his dad is a good man, and the troops say "like father, like son."
