The flags in front of the Winton Global office on River Road in Prince George are flying at  half mast.

They honour Matthew McCully, the Canadian Armed Forces Corporal who died last Friday in Afghanistan.  Corporal McCully’s father is a supervisor at Winton Global’s  planer division.

Today, the body of Corporal Matthew McCully arrived at Canadian Forces Base Trenton.

A member of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron (2 CMBG HQ & Sig Sqn), based in Petawawa, Ontario, Corporal McCully was killed last Friday  while conducting  a joint Afghan-Canadian foot patrol close to the  village of Nalgham, about 35 kilometres west of Kandahar City.

Corporal McCully was killed May 25, 2007, at approximately 8 a.m. Kandahar time by an improvised explosive device, while conducting a joint Afghan-Canadian foot patrol close to the village of Nalgham, approximately 35 km west of Kandahar City.

Corporal McCully’s family issued this statement through the Canadian Forces:

As the family of Matthew McCully we wish to express firsthand how proud we are of Matthew. Matthew was caring, outgoing, adventurous somewhat quiet young man. He had a "mission” and he was going to fulfill it at all costs. Matthew died doing what he wanted to do and doing what he truly believed in. Matthew will be greatly missed, he will be remembered as our and Canada’s Hero. At this time we would like to extend a sincere thank you to our Canadian Army for their tremendous support to our family during this difficult time.

How boring life would be if we were all the same......How nice it is to know we all have special qualities to share.
