Winton Global's planer operation in Prince George
Winton Global has just announced it will be reducing staff at its sawmill-planer operation in Prince George by 78 people as it reduces the operations from three shifts down to two.
The change will come into effect following a week of downtime set for July 3rd to 6th inclusive.
The shift reduction will continue for the "foreseeable future" and will reduce production by about 80 million board feet.
"The severely depressed and oversupplied commodity lumber market in North America combined with the strengthening Canadian dollar have forced us to make these difficult decisions" says President and CEO John Elmslie.
Elmslie says the company will continue to monitor market conditions and review its operating status on a weekly basis until the market improves.
