PEP Warns There is Still Danger
By 250 News
The British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program is reminding residents and tourists that continued safety awareness is imperative during the spring flood season.
During flood season, residents and tourists should stay away from river banks and stream banks as they can be unstable and dangerous. High stream flows can erode and undercut banks, making them prone to collapse.
Do not walk through moving water. Less than 15 centimetres (six inches) of moving water can make you fall.
When travelling on back-country roads and bridges, carefully consider whether it is safe to proceed. Take extra care when driving; familiar roads may look dramatically different when flooded. Do not drive into flooded areas. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away.
If you are planning to travel, check road conditions at Drive BC www.drivebc.ca.
Currently several communities have issued declarations of state of local emergency, evacuation alerts and evacuation orders.
* Residents should also be prepared with emergency supply kits and to contact their local governments and listen to radio or television reports for any up-to-
date information.
* Residents and tourists may also call the toll-free B.C. flood information line at 1 888 350-6070. The line has extended its hours and is now open from 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m.
