It is Father’s Day,

Father’s Day was  first proposed by Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, in 1909.  She wanted a special day to honour her father,  William Smart,  a veteran of the Civil War.

Smart was  widowed  when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. He was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father’s Day was observed June 19th in 1910 in Spokane Washington.

The  top ten "gifts" for  dad, as  suggested by one  website,  are:

  1. watch
  2. sports events tickets
  3. facial care
  4. grooming kit
  5. wine
  6.  leather dress wallet
  7. set of golf clubs
  8. fishing gear
  9. swiss army  hunter knife
  10. auto card manager

No tie on the list??
