In announcing a $250-thousand dollar grant to the College of New Caledonia, Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell says the resulting program will help the Lheidli T’enneh Band meet its education needs as it moves closer to its goal of self-government.

At the end of March, band members actually turned down a treaty that had been tentatively inked with the province and federal government in October of last year.  (click here for details)  Band Chief Dominic Frederick says, "We are pleased with the College of New Caledonia and government’s partnership, support and assistance in addressing a significant challenge confronting Aboriginal governments in meeting the supply and demand of a more qualified workforce that reflects the cultural and learning needs of the community."

Minister Coell says, "This funding will help about 100 members of the band acquire vital skills llike adult basic education and job readiness, management and leadership."

The band worked with CNC to identify several principles to guide the training, including: increasing education in governance, technology and e-learning opportunities, and sustainability that will build on the assets and strengths of the community.  The program will be run on the Shelley Reserve, with the college providing a coordinator and academic advisors and counsellors on-site, so students have immediate access to information and support.

"Working with Aboriginal partners in education and community development is one of the key mandates of the College of New Caledonia," says President John Bowman.  "We look forward to a longstanding relationship."
