BC 61 Ottawa 27

Is this Renegade race horse headed to the glue factory?

If you like a lot of offense this game was for you.

It was a scene from a Hallmark card as a pride of BC Lions took to the field tonight in the backyard of our country’s political pirates. On this special night (if you’re a Lions fan) when ya peel back the layers, the outcome for all intents and purposes was never in doubt.

The writing was on the wall as early as 1:19 of the first quarter with a gift 15 yd. TD by DB Baron Miles on a blocked Matt Kellett punt. It was the Renegades first series of the game...and it went downhill from there for the Gades as the Lions seemed like they could do no wrong.

A single by Matt Kellett midway through the quarter ended the opening frame 7-1.

In the second quarter the BC scoring was left to Duncan O’Mahony who hit for three field goals and a single. The last O’Mahony score was compliments of a 6 play Dickenson drive in just 39 seconds to give his kicker a legitimate chance of splitting the uprights.

Meanwhile the Lion’s special teams began to assert themselves as Aaron Lockett takes a 90 yard punt return to the house for six.

With the Lockett TD the rout was taking shape as the quarter ended 23-6.

The Leos open the 2nd half with an Aaron Lockett (who was on fire tonight) 56 yard punt return on the Ottawa kickoff.

On just their first play from scrimmage Lion’s QB Dave (who’s your daddy) Dickenson finds Geroy Simon for an electrifying 42 yard pass and run play for the major.

Dickenson’s first two passes of the 3rd quarter would result in BC touchdowns.

Including Simon’s contribution, the Lions would put up 20 points in just 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter. Ryan Thelwell scored his first of two touchdowns, and 2 more field goals by Duncan O’Mahony would round out the 20 point BC assault. At this point the Lions had scored 2 field goals and 2 touch downs on their previous 4 straight possessions

Early in the 3rd Dickenson would leave the contest to sit out the final 20 minutes to rest a sore shoulder. Backup Buck Pierce would again see his number called and took to the field sporting an 80% pass completion average.

Ottawa’s Josh Ranek would scamper from the Leo’s 13 yard line in the dying moments of the 3rd. for their first major of the contest....43-13 BC.
.
At just the 18 sec mark of the fourth Thelwell would find the end zone again on a 54 yard pass and run play from Buck Pierce. O’Mahony would score 3 more times with 2 FG from the 15 and 43 along with a 67 yard single to round out the BC scoring.

Josh Ranek would strike for 2 late Renegade TD’s as the Lion’s D seemed to relax a little with the game out of reach.

Midway through the 4th Pierce was replaced by 3rd stringer Jarius (sp?) Jackson who took the ball into Duncan O’Mahony’s range. The BC kicker didn’t disappoint by running his night to five for six.... 53-16 Lions.

Don’t wish to be critical of JJ, who sees little game time but I thought he had some difficulty finding his 2nd reads and forced the ball tonight. More experience and he’ll be better at reading defenses.

This is the 3rd straight loss in the past four weeks for these Renegades, during which time they were outscored 140-62.

The  win puts the Lions up by 6 over the second place Edmonton Eskimos. Each have played 10 games. BC sees the Esks next in Edmonton, Sat. Sept. 24th.

Better cancel your poker night.

Notable notes:

If the Gades don’t soon turn this wreck around, the season will again be remembered for it’s futility and yet another annus horribilis into the record books.

The contest was another game dejour for QB Dave Dickenson who only played two and a half quarters finishing 17 for 21 (81%) for 252 yards.

Ottawa finished with 6 turnovers vs. 2 given up by the Lions.

By the end of the 3rd quarter Baron Miles had two interceptions and a blocked punt for a TD.

In spite of the beating the Leos inflicted on the Gades this game, the score could have been even more lopsided as 2 BC touchdowns were called back.

Giveaways killed the Renegades tonight as they went about poisoning their own well over and over again. Not sure what the turnover numbers were but the Lions feasted on them as they converted them into points.

On an unrelated note, even the CBC strike and zero commentary couldn’t keep the audience #’s down during the Lions last game against Sask. Seems that at average 580,000 fans, the largest national audience of the season took in the contest. So good to see the Canadian product still has strong appeal.

Lions next game is at home...Saturday Sept. 8th at 7:00 PM Pacific time.
