The first arrival in the hospital's new maternity ward, flanked by proud PGRH staff

Nataya Florence Alexander doesn't realize it, but she made history on Tuesday...

At 3:09am, June 26th, Nataya became the first baby born in the just-opened $14-million dollar Maternal-Child Centre of Excellence at Prince George Regional Hospital.

Proud parents are Rebecca Alexander and Sheldon Wilson of Prince George.  Their pink bundle of joy weighed in at a healthy eight-pounds, 15-ounces.

Meantime, Northern Health's Director of Communications, Mark Karjaluoto, says the move to the new maternity ward occurred on Tuesday without a hitch.

Karjaluoto says a water pipe broke during some work on the 5th floor (former maternity ward) on Monday of this week.  He says, fortunately, it occurred in a washroom, so about 80-percent of the water went down a floor drain.  However, there was some leakage into the neonatal ICU, so that unit actually moved to the new centre slightly sooner than planned, on Monday evening.
