As people all over the world re-examine their emergency preparedness, and what they could have done to help ease the suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, we are reminded that today is World First Aid Day  .

“As we’ve seen in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, regular folks with first aid knowledge can save lives,” says Becky Row, First Aid and Water Safety Program Representative for the Northern BC & Yukon Region of the Canadian Red Cross. “Everybody thinks ‘Somebody will help. Somebody will call 911. Somebody will know what to do.’ We’re encouraging people to be the somebody that saves a life.”

To mark World First Aid Day in Canada, Red Cross will be offering an on-line first aid quiz and contest at www.redcross.ca to help people determine their level of first aid knowledge.

The Canadian Red Cross offers a wide variety of first aid and injury prevention programs for all ages, from children to adults, and for all skill and interest levels from babysitters to first responders.

You can find out more about the programs available by calling the toll free number   1-888-307-7997 or by visiting the Red Cross website at www.redcross.ca.
