New PG Radio Station To Launch Next Week

It took a little longer than originally anticipated, but as of Tuesday morning, Prince George residents will be able to tune their dials to a new radio station.
The Prince George Community Radio Society had hoped to begin broadcasting back in March, after receiving licence approval from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in December.
93.1 CFIS FM will install its transmitter today, following last night's rezoning application approval by City Council for its office space at Studio 2880.

The official launch for the Society’s community radio station is at 9:31am, precisely, Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
CFIS will air a mix of  pop, soft-rock and country crossover hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s.  The station also plans to add a number of programs dedicated to promoting local sports and cultural events, as well as information programming.

sounds kind of neat :) variety never hurt anyone.
Welcome to our world...CFIS 93.1...

In addition to the christian station at 107.3 that recently went on the air, Prince George is getting a more varied radio voice.

VOAR at 107.3 went on the air a few months ago and appears to be sponsored by the 7th Day Adventist church. The station originates in St. John's Newfoundland.
I wish PG would get a more powerful radio voice. 50 km out of town and they all disappear.

I don't know what the costs are to go to 50,000 watts, for instance and belt it out as BC's Northern Capital and pull in people to shop at box stores and gamble in Casinos and spend all their hard earned cash in PG to make us richer than we already are.

;-)
most people in PG listen to satellite radio, seen all the antennas on everyones vehicle roof.
Whats the point of having another radio station in PG to tell us that a car dealership is giving away free hot dogs if you test drive a car.
OR
edit half the song out so they have more time for all the commercials,

If you need the local news look at this page, it has the news usually a day before anyone else

Satellite radio is far superior to local radio that cuts out at the city limits.
I assume the "Christian" station mentioned above is a repeater pulled down from satellite.

Not listed yet on their site. Maybe it is a pirate repeater station. :-)

A 50 watt repeater according to this. I gather no rezoning was required for the station.
Community radio won't have advertising, so you don't have to worry about the car dealership remotes.

How about an open line show Ben?
Too bad it isn't an AM station, at least with AM you can hear the station more than 20km out of town.
Sounds like a good format though
Satellite radio is for people who live in their cars or trucks. I can't justify it myself. Just me and my old Buddy Holly tapes along with the Beach Boys, too. Works fer me. And the tapes have been paid for centuries ago. So there!
This station is on the air now with test programming. I would have to guess that with the music their playing, the established radio stations in Prince George will certainly be losing quite a few listeners to this new radio station.

Thanks for the positive responses so far.

Just a few notes to clarify some concerns & comments;

First, to owl & acrider54; We are starting with a "developmental license" from the CRTC. This means we are limited to a transmission of 5 watts. When we apply for a full license, we will be seriously considering a high power FM or possibly an AM transmission. Unfortunately, AM is very expensive to run.

Second, to bohemian; the CRTC eliminate commercial content restrictions on community radio stations years ago. We will be running commercials to pay for our operations. We will, however, have a "programming first" objective with a self imposed commercial limit of 5 minutes each hour. We hope to reduce that to 4/hour within three years. As far as Ben's involvement, we haven't had a chance to sit down to discuss any posibilities yet.

Any other questions or concerns, feel free to contact me through our e-mail; cfisfm@yahoo.ca.

Thanks;
