Call Goes Out For Volunteer Reinforcements in Vanderhoof
By 250 News
With water levels expected to rise and the risk of flooding increasing, Prince George-Omineca MLA John Rustad is putting out the call for reinforcements to aid the hundreds of volunteers already sandbagging in Vanderhoof.
"While the flood risk has ended for the rest of the province, the residents of Vanderhoof are still facing a very serious risk of heavy flooding over the weekend," says Rustad. "I'm asking anyone who is able to come and lend a hand as we work together to safeguard people and homes in the Vanderhoof area."
Heavy rainfall in the Nechako basin on yesterday - and the expectation of more rain to come - has increased the risk of a temporary dike failure and flooding over the weekend. If that occurs, approximately 140 homes will need to be evacuated.
"The volunteer response from the community so far has been incredible, but we're not out of the woods yet. Every extra pair of hands is an important addition to our effort to hold back the waters," says Rustad.
Ministry of Forests fire crew workers and an additional 80,000 sandbags have been dispatched to the area.
Anyone interested in assisting in the flood-mitigation efforts in Vanderhoof can call 250-567-4666.
