City workers flush water lines on Pilot Street on Wednesday

The sweltering heat could put a slight crimp in the City’s annual maintenance of its water main lines.

Utility Operations Supervisor, Kevin Sanregret, says city crews flush out a section of the city’s water mains each summer to remove any sediment that may have settled in the lines.  The Bowl is targeted for the "uni-directional" flushing this year, with parts of the Foothills neighbourhood already complete.

Sanregret says flushing operations will probably be suspended for the next couple of days during the hot weather.  "There’s a high demand on water resources in this type of weather and there’s not much point in us competing with everybody else."

He says a section of the city is done each summer, with the ultimate objective being that all lines have been flushed once every three to four years.

Sanregret says city residents may notice a slight discoloration in their tap water, but, normally, most won’t even notice that crews are in their neighbourhood.

"We check the water for turbidity, we have turbidity meters there and that’s how we judge how clear the water is," says the City’s Utility Operations Supervisor.  He says the flushing continues until the turbidity levels are very, very low - near zero.
