A new pedestrian underpass at Highway 16 in the Strathcona Neighbourhood

The City's Transportation Engineer says contractors building a pedestrian underpass as part of the Heritage River Trail system have met their main objective of finishing the above-ground work on Highway 16 by mid-July.

Glenn Stanker says, “The project is moving right along, there was a little bit of difficulty getting some of the materials that they needed – there were special materials that they needed for the retaining walls – and they managed to get what they need and they’re moving right along now.”

"Now what remains to be done is they will continue to work on the paving of the trails, the landscaping, the retaining walls and the illumination and electrical and that will take the balance of this project over the summer.”

Stanker says the project is in the order of $900-thousand dollars, but the provincial government provided $250-thousand dollars through its cycling infrastructure partnership program.  And the City is seeking out other funding sources.  He says an application has been submitted to ICBC, but says it's, “Ironic, but a great pleasure to say, that we won’t get as much for this as we may have, had their been a collision history on the highway.  It’s the way they do the economic calculations with ICBC."

"I think it demonstrates that we are doing this project before a collision requires it to be done, as has happened in many other situations," Stanker says.  "There’s been a few collisions, but they were long ago and of not terrible severity, I understood from the collision statistics, but this is really good – it’s a pro-active project.”

He adds, "We’re very pleased with how it’s looking and it’s going to be a tremendous asset in the trail network for everybody.”

The street People, Drug Dealers Are going to love this Tunnel. I hear them talking about it already, The city really must of thought into this tunnel,(a overpass) would have been safer... Put a tunnel right beside low cost Housing, Right next to the Hood and a park... Want to be Mugged, Want a Place to sleep, The city has built a perfect place.
This is true. IT is a place waiting for a crime to happen.
I am somewhat humbled, now that a troll has revealed that I rarely leave the comfort and safety of my arm chair. Nonetheless, I offer a question, if not an opinion;
Would it not have been cheaper to install an overpass? I have seen where they have built them so you can ride a bicycle, push a perambulator, or even simply walk up, across, and down again. I am curious, does anybody on this board know why the politicians would choose to go underground vs. above the highway? I don't know, maybe by the time foundations are put in, and steel fabricated, painted and erected, it would cost more to go up. Also, I guess, the cost of periodic re-painting.
But on the whole, I agree, a tunnel would seem to be a likely place for the criminal scum to congregate. Surveillance cameras are all the rage right now, perhaps our august leaders are planning on installing camera, with appropriate guarding of course.
Time will tell.
metalman.
Our City is still living in the stone age. Have they ever herd of a cross walk with a traffic signal at a fraction of the cost. But then I guess if you believe that 70 people a day will use the tunnel you still believe in santa clause.

Cheers
There was very little pedestrian traffic crossing the Highway at this point in the past and of course there will be even less going through the tunnel. People may very well just continue to cross the Highway as they do now.

$900,000.00 seems like a lot of money for the amount of use this facility will get.

Do we need a **Head check**

An overhead walkway would have been more money and still has potential for people to drop items on the cars beneath so you would want it relatively sealed.

My understanding of recent planning releases from the city is they don't really plan anything but when they hear there is potential for funding partners to help pay for something they jump on that and then make it a priority even though it hasn't been mentioned in any public planning documents before that date. This tunnel is one example.

To me if any place needs a tunnel / overhead walkway it is by the college and central ave or another one down by Spruceland mall and Central. See people all the time trying to go across there with no break in the heavy traffic.
I would like to say "here, here to the overpass!!" Coming from Calgary where there exists many overpasses that can "safely" be navigated by pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchairs, baby buggies...etc.. I myself, being a small female, could not be convinced that this is a "safe" passage across a major road, and would not use it, nor can I see anybody else of a right mind other than the afore mentioned drug deallers and homeless for shelter! On the other hand if it were an overpass and clearly visible I would have no problem. Come out of the "dark ages PG!!"
I would also like to point out that the city really needs to create a safe passage for cylists & pedestrians alike, down the Hart Highway (in the interest of being "green")
The tunnel is NOT located by low cost housing. All the townhouses are individually owned with some rented out.
The tunnel is not by low cost housing....What part of the world ARE YOU LIVING IN.....Rentals, LOTS OF THEM, MOST BY LANDLORDS THAT DO LIVE HERE..HOW FAR IS THE HOOD??? 3 OR 4 BLOCKS....MOST OF THE CRACK HOUSES ARE A COUPLE OF BLOCKS FROM THE TUNNEL.
I agree 100% with lunarguy.
Don, give it a rest.

I take your point as to the location of Quince, Oak, etc. but don`t you understand that there are some reasonably price townhouses with some reasonable people in them as well. Painting the kettle all black is a bit over the top.

As for your use of upper case letters, it begs the question. Does anyone listen when you are yelling?
Oh my, I really hate to admit this but I have to agree with Don Mackenzie (that mostly never happens)
What a waste of money! Like I said before, its a pretty pricy escape route to and from the hood. There isn't a decent human being with any brains that is going to walk through that tunnel om the daylight never mind after dark. Even the people that live in the "reasonably priced town houses" wouldn't be that stupid. There is a cross walk down by A&W on 20th maybe they should have utilized that instead. That money could have fixed allot of our city streets.
I see kids crossing there all the time going to PGSS with no crosswalk and an IPOD in their ear. It's a function of time until someone gets clipped. The road has a steep ditch so it would make sense to go under. This is also part of a larger trail system that will connect much of the city. There is no guarantee that nobody on the trail would be a victim of crime, but I would feel comfortable using it during the day.

some posters should lighten up with the negativity. Prince George is decades behind most cities for a trail network. It's nice to see it moving forward.
Could have built a world class cross use hiking-biking and horse ridng trail system in and around PG for that price....
Wow, all of the above comments are good ones, even the ones with flames coming out around the sides! If there is a lot of pedestrian and bicycular (?) traffic at that location, it would be better served by an overpass. If dopes are dropping things on the traffic below, then we hoard the walkway with mesh. One point raised above is the need for a safe path down the Hart into the bowl. There are numerous potential routes for such a path, and in my humble opinion, a path from the Hart, and to and from other areas, is sorely needed. I really like the notion of combined use trails too. I envision a day when one could rent a bicycle or horse right here in town, and spend a couple of hours riding around the city, safe from traffic.
metalman.
I am offended by the comment by you Don Mackenzie since I own one of the so called low cost housing. You should get you facts straight. The comment by Runner46 is awesome. Thankyou for defending the neighbourhood.
Hey DPJ. yes the area you own and reside in has undergone a bit of a cleanup during the past few years. This is a good thing....good that there are owners living in there and good for the community. But it still has it's problems. I would suggest you drop into a community policing office and ask to check out the break and enter maps and see exactly where the complex stands with regards to crime stats.
