Is Petty Crime Really Down? One Man's Opinion

The national crime rate is dropping, that is reported crime according to Statistics Canada. No surprise there, and everyone involved is taking credit for a 15 year decline. While they are beating on their chests, they should stop to take a deep breath to realize that these are no more than statistics which are terribly misleading.

Where is the greatest decline taking place, non violent items such as break-ins, and minor thefts?

Stop right there did I hear, minor thefts?

When was the last time anyone could get a police officer to investigate a minor theft?  Steal the kid’s bike out of the back yard and you phone the cops who will give you a number, the result, you don’t even bother going through the hassle knowing that you are not going to get your theft investigated. Minor thefts forget it.

Ask any business in this city the last time they phoned in for a shop lifter, or someone who has stolen product from their business and they will tell you up front it isn’t worth the hassle to try and hold someone for a couple of hours while you wait for the police who are busy at other jobs

The Police don’t like to come.  A couple of years ago a  Vancouver Judge said, retailers invite this type of theft by leaving merchandise out in the open.

Now that raises the question, is petty crime really down?

Well that is reported petty crime.

Now homicide is down by about 10% in Canada and I can just see you folks jumping all over that one, but violent deaths are cyclical in nature.

So do you think your home is safer now, your car, your bike, your snow machine your four tracks?  If you have answered no, I won’t  be surprised.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Ben, you seem to think that the local cops are sitting in the detachment with their feet up on the desk. The fact of the matter is that they are run off their feet in this town with the endless cycle of assaults, robberies etc. P.G. isn't known as Surrey of the North for nothing.Anything that isn't locked down in this town is as good as gone. If you talk with any cops who have gone from P.G. to a similar sized city like Kamloops they will tell you that the difference is night and day.P.G. makes K-loops look like a ghost town.Lousy way to live with everything under lock and key but thats the way it is in this town.
Unreported Petty Crime is on the increase. Why? Because these stupid little slugs know they will get away with it. A trend may start to lean towards those pissants being reprimanded by the ones they choose to "rip off" whenever they happen to be caught in the act. But then, a battered face, a broken knuckle or two, a busted knee - they too may become "petty" and "unreportable". A new law reads: any injury sustained to the face, hands, or legs while committing a "petty crime" will not be acknowledged for any reason whatsoever..... Similar to the "if you drink while you drive and have an accident" law.

P.S. Good article Ben, and Troll, we know the cops are not sitting around with their feet up. I feel for them, they have a horrendous and mostly thankless job to do. But it does not change the waiting time and dismissal on the "small stuff", Does it??
Till a store owner blows somebody away one day...oh I forgot this is Canada,we don't do these things!.
No it doesn't.What it means is that it is so goddamn busy in PG the priority calls are dealt with first. That takes time and usually a mountain of paperwork. If a resident decides that he is going to leave his bike in the front yard and it is stolen, well too bad so sad he contributed to the problem. Thats a fact of life in PG only many are too ignorant and lazy to exercise any form of crime prevention and when it happens to them they are usually the ones to whine the loudest.
Whoa, hold on there Troll. You're saying that if we don't keep all of our belongings well secured we contribute to the problem? I suppose you think that every attractive woman that dresses in a sexy manner also deserves to be raped? This is ludicrous. If the cops spent as much time following up on crime calls as they do on traffic and the courts started imposing realistic sentencing, then maybe we could count on a true lower crime rate.
What troll means is that at least make thieving a little more difficult for those who are going to commit it.
Sh*tdisturber, just by questioning my post shows that you are one of the ones I was referring to. Yes, if you leave your crap laying around or your vehicle unlocked then you are part of the problem. Most cops are too busy going from call to call to do much traffic enforcement so you are wrong there too. Your analogy regarding an attractive woman is just plain dumb.
What do cops do on the average shift? They don't get-bad-guys-off-the-street. The work product of the average cop results in 1 incarceration per year, says Stats Canada. And those slugs cause 1 conviction per unit per month. In his field study of patrol policing (Reproducing Order) Richard Ericson found that most cop time during a shift is spent in "hiding spots" out of public view. In Vancouver, the average slug takes 12 minutes to get on-site in response to a "major crime" call, and another 5 minutes to access CORNET/Versadex data on address, suspect and complainant "history." Yes, call the cops and they check YOU out. Do cops serve and protect? Since the beginning of Canada, no sued cop has ever admitted to a duty of care to anyone. We have an obligation to pay cops; they exercise right to refuse work. Cops refer to control of their workplace as "easing." Our unaccountable cops take half hour coffee and hour long lunch breaks, and they take turns sleeping on the graveyard shift.

Do cops have tons of paperwork? Most arrests are for trivial matters - property crime/public disorder - and Form 1 informations are rarely more than one-third of a page. Only a half wit would spend more than 10 minutes on same. Over half of all charge recommendations in BC are either thrown by Crown Counsel or tossed back to cops, for "more information." False arrest is the norm in BC, as seen in the false arrest of Ian Bush, for "obstruction." (Vancouver Sun morons keep reporting that he was arrested for having an open beer container). Arrests assert cop power, and intimidate targets (Vancouver slugs secured only 200 convictions for possession of marijuana, last year). False arrest also puts the target in the CORNET database, where those smeared are secretly barred for life from both government employment or in regulated businesses. In addition, government contracts do NOT go to anyone on CORNET, and that information is used even if the target has NEVER been charged with an offence.

I read the definitive police "Environment Scan" viz Canada's busiest police service, at the Urban Affairs Library in Toronto. The average cop deals with a violent offender, once every 5 weeks. And Toronto's Jane-Finch and Parkdale neighbourhoods are 10 times as bad as anything in Prince George. If you don't want to work for a living, then become a cop. It is better than welfare.
Why did cop firearms Nazi "investigators" waste over a billion dollars? Check out how 1 cop spent 200 hours on 1 case. And Judge Fathead put cop testimony over that of a psychiatrist:

And the same people stripped firearms training credentials from a man who criticized the Firenut office. And they sent him murder threats, and covered up same:

Truth, you must be having another one of your "Spells" or the tin foil is wrapped around your head too tight. When the cops go to a call they tend to check things out such as history, alcohol, weapons etc.It is a matter of officer and public safety. that should make sense to even a simpleton like yourself. How many times have you cut and pasted the same crap? 99% of it is wrong and has no factual basis. You should maybe venture out of your parent's basement and take a look at the real world.
Troll, you assume way too much. I don't have any "crap" laying around, or leave my vehicle unlocked in public, so don't assume anything about myself. My point is that we have the right to expect some security in our society and that will only happen if we stop allowing criminals free reign to commit these crimes. This will only happen through investigation & prosecution of these criminals. Hiding behind locked doors does nothing to address this issue, as they only move on to the next easy victim. You may feel secure, but the problem is still there. We as a society need to stand up and say enough! Then follow it up with actions.
Calling one another down in this forum does nothing but lower the value of any possible further discussion.

Sh*tdisturber,if you wish to have more security in this country they will have to hire more police and allow them to be actually out on the road instead of mired in a big stack of paperwork. With the shortage of staff comes the need to prioritize the complaints which means no attendance for bicycle thefts etc.It is not as simple as just waving a wand and having the police show up at every call. Not in this town anyhow.Maybe in Mayberry.
