The cooler weather may not be what you had in mind for your summer, but it has been good news for the Prince George Fire Centre.

Since April 1st of  this year, there have  been 226 fires reported to the Prince George Fire Centre, with 140 fires caused by lightning and 86 by human activity.  That is  well below the  number experienced last summer during the  same time period.  During the hot dry summer of 2006, by  July 26th  the P.G. fire Centre had dealt with 463 fires, of which, 193 had been started by  humans, 269 had been started by lightning.

Even with the cooler weather this summer, crews have been busy.  They responded to five fires in the past week. Three were caused by lightning and two by human activity. All five fires were less than one hectare in size. Two are now out, two are being patrolled and one has been turned over to the landowner for fire suppression activities.

There is more  good news,  as Unit crews and an Incident Management Team have been demobilized from the fire in the vicinity of La Salle Lakes. Although there will continue to be smoke visible in the middle of the burned area, that fire is not expected to spread outside of the perimeter and crews from the Robson Valley Zone will continue to patrol this fire until it is out.

Heading into the weekend, the fire danger rating is currently moderate throughout most of the Prince George Fire Centre. The current forecast calls for a warming trend in southern portions of the fire centre, thundershowers in the north, and a risk of lightning in the Robson Valley on Sunday.

The Prince George Fire Centre continues to  assist other  parts of the country.  Earlier this week 2 three person attack  teams were  sent to  Thompson Manitoba to help  battle fires in that region.
